Help for a '96 Civic EX
I am looking for an engine for my brother's 96 Civic EX. His car currently has the D16Y8 engine in it (which I think is the VTEC model).
I am wondering if a non-VTEC engine from that same year will work in his car with the same wiring harness and ECU or if I need to change either or both of them out.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

The Non Vtec motor is a D16y7 and yes the y8 harness will work. but being the CAT on the EX model is under the motor you might have to re run the wire for your secondary O2 sensor.
Also if your not planning on using the y7 ECU
The y8 ECU will throw codes for VTEC
I Ran a y7 Exhuast on my y8 motor where the CAT is right after the exhuast manifold and got a CEL for running rich.
You may get a CEL for running lean. I dont really know.
But any of that might help you.

When I removed the engine that was originally in there all I did was take off the down tube....I don't remember seeing an O2 sensor there....
Are the manifolds the same on both of the motors or would they be different?

the 96 ex has a the o2 sencor in the exhaust manifold and in the cat under the car.
the dx model with the d16y7 non v-tec has the cat as part of the exhaust manifold the d16y8 has the cat under the car. the exhaust manifold from the y8 should work on the y7 but make sure and use the cat under the car.

Now I am a little confused....I have the Y8 engine and all of the stuff that came with it and the Y7 engine but nothing that comes with it. From what I understand I need to use cat and manifold from the Y8 for it to run correctly.
Am I right? Sorry to sound so ignorant.

why would yo go down to a non vtec? thats useless.
It wont work cause the IAC uses a differnet plug, and the ECU will throw a CEL for the absense of VTEC.
Just go boost if your lookin for power

All you need to do is use the y8 exhaust with the y7 engine everything will bolt up, don't worry about the y7 manifold/cat the y8 exhaust will work.
Now some of the other stuff to take a look at:
The iacv, I believe that the ecu for the y7 is a three wire and for the y8 is 2. (but some automatic ex i think have a three wire iacv on the tb, hopefully someone will correct me if wrong). Check the link in my sig. In the write-up he talks about the iacv between the vtec and non-vtec.
The ex injectors are 240 cc and the dx injectors are 190 cc so with the dx ecu you will need the dx injectors.
Just out of curiosity why are u going from vtec to non-vtec most people on ht have spare engine parts hanging around, I myself have some y8 parts that I would be willing to sell if you need them? just curious that's all.

I am going down to a non-VTEC because that is all I can find for a decent price that does not have more than 100,000 miles on it. As far as fixing the car there is a hole in the bottom of the block big enough to fit my fist through, so fixing the current engine is not an option(it was purchased like that).
However, if anyone reading the forum has a Y8 they want to get rid of let me know and we can talk.
Also the car is for my younger brother so the less power the better for me. If he wants to buy a VTEC engine later on I will be happy to put it in for him, right now we just need the car running.

So couldn't I just switch the injectors and IACV?

I haven't checked to see if the head was good on the Y8 yet, but that is a good idea.
Just out of curiosity would the intake manifold and throttle body from the y8 bolt up to the y7 head? That may solve the problem of the IACV being different.

Agreed. Just buy the block and save cash, keeping the extra horses from the sohc vtec

because on the old engine a rod was thrown through the block and i am not sure if there are metal shavings in the top end or not.
I am still curious if the Y8 intake manifold will fit the Y7 head though, just to be safe.

The oil must pass through the filter before it goes to the head. It still should be good.

yes the y8 intake manifold will bolt up to the y7 head. some y8 IM like 96-98 do not have little ports above the runners that you don't need to block, but the 99-00 do. Also some have a nipple on the part that bolts up to the head, if you saw it you will know what I am talking about it is right in the middle, I just blocked it off with a cap and there is one other nipple, small one, on the back driver side that will need to be blocked off also.
I currently have a y8 IM on my y7, i believe it is a 99 so I had to JB weld the holes. All I did was us the TB from the y7, for iacv purpose, and block off the iacv on the back of the IM with a hose, or U tube. I also used some diagram from http://www.slhondaparts.com to figure where the vacuum and coolant lines need to go.
Other then that I think all you need to do is add one wire for the y7 ecu since it looks for a three wire iacv unless your y8 already has a three wire iacv, some y8 like auto's came with a three wire iacv. Oh and the injectors need to be y7 190cc or you will get a code for running to rich.
