Default cv axle stuck

putting in a new cv axle and it seems to be stuck about 1/16 to 1/8 from the raised lip on the tranny...the other one looks like there may be a space there as well..i did not hear a click but my hearing is not so great...can i tap lightly on the end of the axle with a rubber mallet while depressing the inner cv joint/axle....could i damage the inner cv joint this way....i have leaned on it pretty good and it won't budge another inch....i imagine if i fill the tranny and it leaks i'll know for sure if it is in all the way...if it does not leak and it is still not all the way in when i start the car will i get a grinding or screeching...thanx,compo1

Tap on the part going into the tranny with a rubber mallet and you should be golden. You'll know when it's in.
