1998 acura 1.6 EL interchangeability?
okay so some of you may be aware of the problems I'm having with my Acura 1.6 EL.
I have a local guy selling a 97 del sol automatic tranny for cheaper than the first guy that was selling his 2000 Civic Si automatic (half the price!) but I want to make sure that the del sol auto tranny will in fact bolt straight up to a d16Y8 engine in the 1.6 EL.
Can people please confirm this info for me.
Thanks

I actually wrote a bit too soon. I'll have to do some further research on this one, as I'm not entirely certain it will be a direct swap.
sweet.
Now my next question is:
Why is it that Honda's 97 Del Sol Si transmission part # is different from that of the Acura EL's?
I was under the assumption that they should be the exact part # if they transmission is exactly the same.
Sorry for asking all the questions I'm just leery on buying a used transmission to only find out that it won't work on my EL. The guy I'm buying it from says absolutely no refunds on this stuff so I don't want to chance it until I'm 100% positive that it is the same.
thanks

After a little more searching, I don't see any reason why they would not be interchangeable. Both cars are equipped with the Y8, so the transmission should be identical. The part number discrepancies could be due to the fact that one is an Acura part and one is a Honda part.
yeah I think you're right on that front. I just spoke to Honda and they told me the Acura part # for the 98 EL is 20021 P4R A32 is actually for a 96-98 Honda Civic Si.
But with that being said the only thing that irks me now is how come Honda has a different part # for the auto tranny for 99-00? I know that cosmetic body parts there were differences between the 96-98 and the 99-00 civic but aside from that there isn't any clear powertrain differences (if any at all which I don't think there is).
Anyhow I am fairly confident now that I know that Honda Civic Si's use the same tranny (D16Y8 engine) so I think I will grab that tranny tonight unless someone here objects to that in the next 2 hours.
Thanks

The '99+ cars are OBD-2b, so there may be some slight wiring or sensor differences, though that is only a guess.

hmm that is a good guess. Then again Honda has always done that with their all their cars. Example is 88-89 crx is slightly different than 90-91 likewise with 92-93 and 94-95. Subtle differences but all the same.
I think its more of manufacturer part # differences to differentiate different gen's of parts. Ultimately however, they're likely all the same.
Thanks for the feedback.

just so everyone here knows.... a 97 del sol Si auto tranny does NOT perfectly fit into a 1998 Acua 1.6 EL automatic. The mounts are the same but the wiring harness is not. The Acura I believe has an electronic downshift solenoid of some sort on the front of the tranny whereas the Del Sol is cable actuated.
