Hello,
I just had my b16 block sleeved with what should Have been darton mid sleeves but I guess the machine shop didnt get the right sleeves. So now I have my block back and it has the darton dry flanged sleeves and they are basically just darton sleeve inserts. I wanted to make around 375-400 daily and 475-500 on ther weekend. will these sleeves be strong enough to use. Has anyone ever used these type of sleeves? Let me know because I am kinda of frustrated and I want to get this settled.

I was told by darton these sleeves could handle 40 psi but were rated at 20psi bc the original sleeves which they are installed in can fail, or shift bc there is no support and the top of the cylinder

stock b series blocks have been proven to 600whp......i honestly have no idea what the hell kinda sleeves your talking about-i'm guess closed deck? but i don't see any reason as to why they would be weaker than stock-as long as they were installed correctly.

 

basically they bore out your sleeve most of the way then they insert the dry sleeve into the bored oiut aluminum sleeve. I have never heard of them until tonight when I was on dartons website reading about them.

it is called a dry sleeve bc there is no coolant that touches the new sleeve itself.

where a wet sleeve (mid sleeve) has the coolant that flows throught the holes in the sleeves flange

ooooo ok i gotcha.
I see no reason why you won't be perfectly fine

 

do you think I will have any problems with sealing between the head and block. bc I know the mids have more surface area to seal it off

you shouldnt have any issues at all. i would guess that b/c the sleeves are just inserts in the stock sleeves that it will seal just like a stock block.
as long as it was decked and the head was milled you should be alright.

 

Thanks, the guy who built my motor is really really good and has built things for me b4 and for my friends I just dont know what he was thinking when he bought these.

i was interested in these too wondered how much whp i could make with them on my b16a as well ?

 

They are still much much better then OEM sleeves. However there alot cheaper to buy and install. The mids are certainly a much better sleeve. What did he charge you? Either way you'll be ok with those sleeves at 500whp if installed corectly with a good tune. You could always have the sleeves O-ringed if you plan on going much over 20psi. but its not nessacry just added insurance. I had my mid's oringed for the cost it just seemed worth the extra 150

 

I accidentally bought a flange sleeved block as well, apparently its from bensons a long time ago,

I had mine at 500whp at 20 psi no problems, but I was soo scared to go any further, as I havent seen anyone on these boards take them any further either.

mine did have a block guard too though, I wanted one because I rev'ed to 9k and didnt want the sleeves walkin.

3 seasons later the motor is still running like a champ, drag racing every week

 

Just put a blockguard and you are set.

 

dont use a block guard! worthless band wagon junk. it will effect those sleeves worse then just running as is.

 

Agreed, however if you want too use one look into the CSS (cylinder support system ) contact Trickeng. Those would be a really good option for the sleeves you have. It would make them more like the Darton mid's. The CSS sets its self apart from other block guards on the market. Since it is machined its not a drop in product.

 

Just put a blockguard and you are set.
