Residue in distributor

Default Residue in distributor

There was a grinding noise inside of my distributor. I opened it up and there was copper colored dusty residue covering the inside of the cap and the rotor and all of the contacts. I cleaned it up and the sound is gone. Does anyone know what causes the residue?

Bearings in the distributor base going bad. Will need to replace the base soon.
