Default Inner cv joint on my ITR

Hi

I have found out that i get a vibration/knocking sound from my inner cv joint, but when I open it, the joint looks ok. The boot have no rips and there was plenty with grease.

But, is it normal that the housing around inner cv joint is a little bit loose? I can barely wiggle it, but there is some movement.

there should be slight play in the inner but the outer should be tight.

After removing the housing from axel, I realize that it is normal. Then my suspicion went to the bearing on the axle. Therefor I tried starting up with just the inner axel, but I get no vibrations or weird sounds. I havel also checked wheel bearing and outer cv joint, and it is ok.

So I really don't understand where the problem is

Today I found the origin of the noize. After removing the axles completely and starting up, I still here the sound. So I reckon it is something to do with my gearbox. Could it be my differential? Since I only here the sound when both sides running (either both axles or no axles) When I tried without the outer axles on the driverside, I heard nothing..

I get a clicking sound from the differential housing when i take sharp left hand turns at low speed. I havent really looked into the problem though.

My problem occurs regardless if I turn or not and the sound doesn't change.
Not so much clicking either, more of a rumbling noize. That's why I first thought it was from the axles.

what about the bearing in your half-shaft?

That was one of my concern also, but I don't hear any sound when only the half-shaft is running. I have also inspected the bearing and I really can't feel any loose movement. Since i get the same sound without any axles, I didn't bother to take that bearing of the shaft.

Anyway, the gearbox is nearly removed now, only 2 engine mounts and one bolt left. I will probably remove it tomorrow. I'm really wondering what the fail is. The gearbox have only run a bit over 15 000 km since it had last service, and the fluid is changed 3 times after that. Was in fact only 2 weeks since i changed last time (MTF3). Also the fluid looks okay, and there was not any metal pieces on my magnetic drain plug either.

Subscribed. Having similar noise and haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

After opening the tranny, I'm still not sure what the problem is

The only thing I find odd is the bearing that is marked on the picture below

I can wiggle the bearing maybe 1-1,5 mm up and down (sideways), and it doesn't feel normal in my opinion. However there is no slack straight from side to side and it feels fine when i turn the bearing around.

So my big question is this; have I found the problem?

I doubt it, that bearing feels "loose" like that even when brand new, it has a lot of play.

but you do have the older style differential bearings. Im thinking maybe input shaft clutch housing bearing (pressed in the clutch housing at the bottom of the main shaft), or diff bearings. pull out the gear assembly (carefully, especially with the mainshaft, it will come apart) and spin the final drive, see if you get any noise there.

Thanks for clearing that out of the picture

The bearing you are referring to, is it this one?

that bearing is okay. I don't hear any sounds when I spin the final drive and the bearings on both sides looks good. They don't feel tight, but with housing mounted it should be more "locked" right?

What about the diff. then? is it possible that something is broken inside? When I spin the diff I hear a little bit of mechanical sounds, but I'm thinking that it is only normal. Can't hear anything that sounds like the rattling sound I get when driving so.

Here are some more pictures:

hmm worn bearings usually just make a wurring noise unless they are REALLY poked.

About your CV bearings, those little inside circles aren't supposed to come out. Did they just fall out or did u pull em out.

Maybe the inner CV bearings are your prob. CHeck how much movement they have and how smooth they are

Just to end this thread, the problem was actually a wheel bearing. Kinda funny to think about all that I have done, and the problem was only the bearing.
Thanks for all the help anyway

Great pictures..this helps me understand my input shaft bearing problem https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/2013559

How hard was it to pull out the gear assembly?
