Default Clutch Pedal freeplay

Hey guys. I was tinkering with my clutch pedal because I wanted to change the engagement point, but unfortunately it doesn't look like it can be done. However, I tried stiffening the pedal by reducing the amount of freeplay to next to nothing....I mean like a 1/16 of an inch. Took it for a test drive after and it felt much nicer than what I'm used to. What I'm wondering is if this is bad for the clutch and/or transmission, because I left it like that for now. Anyone have any suggestions?

it should not mess anything up you only took the slack out the pedal

i dont think so but over doing it can prematurely wear the clutch friction material

you can adjust the pedal engagement point.

just loosen the locknut on cylinder and twist the shaft with a pair of plyers (or your hand if you can)

but dont do it too much or...

You mean the locknut underneath the clutch pedal, right? On the shaft with the threaded tip that screws into the back of the pedal arm? (thats a mouthful )

Funny, I just adjusted my pedal today too. My pedal wouldn't engage untill more than half way of releasing the pedal which would give me crappy starts slightly uphill. I looked like the biggest *** stalling out going uphill at a red light. Now that I adjusted it, The pedal engages almost instantly upon releasing and every single shift is super smooth now. you MUST make sure that when you fully push in the clutch, that the clutch is not grabbing at ALL. I loosened the locknut on the shaft with the threaded tip thingy and just start twisting it with my fingers. Do some test runs. You will feel it engage MUST faster now. If you feel your clutch slipping while accelerating fast, adjust the screw where your cruise control kill is/was. You will be adjusting the screw by pulling it out some so the pedal isnt so pushed in and isn't "riding the clutch" I got my auto to manual swap done about 2 weeks ago now and am tweaking things here and there which is turning out beautiful each time.

There is a pedal height adjustment AND a master cyl. adjustment in most year civics.

The pedal can be adjusted anywhere you like it ,BUT, the ONLY correct adjustment for the rod on the master cyl. (the one with the lock nut) is about 1/8...1/16 inch or so. Just a little free play.

If you adjust the pedal height , you will have to adjust the rod. Like a couple of other people said on here. DO NOT adjust the rod too long or it can hold the clutch partially released while you are driving, and it will burn up your clutch very quickly.

Oh yeah, i think this is the exact same problem I've been having with my clutch. When I first played with it last night I think there was about an inch of freeplay on the top before it started plunging the master cyl. I extended the pushrod right up tight to the engagement point, and then thought to myself "Is this going to leave my clutch partially disengaged when I'm driving?" Not good! So I set it so that there's about a 1/16" at most before it starts plunging, and it feels alot tighter...like new clutch tight. Didn't seem to be a problem with hard accels/high rpms either. I'll double check it today.

And to think that for 2 years of driving this car that was probably the cause of the crappy clutch performance. At least I learned something new...thanks everyone for the help!

One more thing....is it bad if I can pull the shifter out of gear into neutral, without pushing in the clutch at all? I'm not sure, but I don't think I could do this before I adjusted the pedal.

it usually wont let you unless you force it out of gear OR UNLESS if the tranny isnt under load at all, it will come out smoothly. You cant be accelerating or decelerating, has to be right in the middle while applying VERY lil gas to maintain speed, then it will pop out.. Or while decelerating, pull on the shifter, tap the gas lightly once, and the gear should pop out. Just dont ever force it out please. I'd rather push/partially push the clutch to release the gear the right way or eventually you will have problems like others here do saying "my car wont stay in 5th gear...My car pops out of gear on its own..." and stuff..

Pay attention to the BOLD. He's right. My car was given to me like this. 3 days after getting it converted, a HOT day came, and I noticed that my clutch would slip alot. I almost started to cry thinking I burned my clutch already or that the guy used an old shitty clutch even though I bought him a brand new kit. Me not knowing **** about stickshift, figured I'd look at the pedal and just improvised.. the lil shaft was out almost all the way and was being held by the tip... at the time I didn't know to adjust that. All I did was adjust the pedal height which let the pedal out alot more and no more slipping. Now I realized that even though it ran perfect, I had WAY too much travel of the clutch and wouldnt engage until half way. I figured that that wasnt good for the pressure plate fingers since I'd be pushing them WAY in. So today... I pushed the clutch back in some... then adjusted the shaft... PERFECT..The clutch pedal looked funny before since it stuck out WAY more than the brake pedal. Now they match. Gosh I talk so much.

Nothing wrong with talking if you have something important to say. And what you've said is very important info to me, dude. Now that you mention it, my clutch pedal is higher than my brake pedal too, and it's kinda stupid. I have to lift my leg like I'm farting just to push the clutch in, and it only takes like an inch before it disengages....badness. I think this weekend I'm going to set it farther back and shorten the pushrod. Thanks again!
