4K Idle!!??? WTF
1997 Civic with B18C1 Y80 trans (engine with H/E/I)
ok so the other week out of no where my car started doing the idle surging thing.. where it was going from like 1k-2k then back to 1k and all over again. Now... it freaking revs up to 4K... WTF? i took my FITV apart and cleaned it, cleaned the IACV, and also took my TB off and cleaned it. No dice. put it all back together and revs up to 4K... now if i unplug the IACV it drops down to like 1k but surges from 1k-1.5k-1k... and also runs REAL rough.? im stumped... i just randomly started unplugging things to see what would happen...
First the Map. - engine run for about 30 seconds real rough like, then dies (all other items are connected)
TPS - nothing with the IACV plugged in but when the IACV is unplugged the car revs back up to 4k?? huh
it kinda seems like there is a HUGE vacuum leak someplace but i have checked all the hoses, nothing!
also when the car is doing the surging from 1k-1.5k-1k i plug the two holes in the TB (for the IACV and FITV) (engine cold) and the car continues to run the same.. like its getting air.. but i dont know where from? any ideas?
HELP ME!! im freaking stumped!

ok just got in from checking some sensors... backprobed at the ECU
Map - 2.8-2.85 V KOEOff 2.3-2.5 KOERuning
TPS - .5V Closed 4.55 WOT (checks good)
ECT - about 2.81V then dropped gradually as the engine warmed up ( i just watned to see it drop a little didnt let it get all the way warmed up.
the only thing that is weird is the MAP sensor is not showing much vacuum in the manifold.. so im thinking there is one f**king huge vacuum leak someplace... but i just cant find it.. any ideas? its not in the IACV or FITV portion, or the break booster...?? maybe its my intake manifold gasket???

Check your FITV.
Remove your intake and let the engine get up to operating temp. There is a small hole in the throttle body. Put your finger on the hole. There shouldn't be any suction. If there is, the FITV isn't working correctly.
If that is the case, most likely the plunger in the FITV backed out. You can take it apart and screw it back in.
To check for vacuum leaks, spray hoses with soapy water to locate the leak.

Wharbone... Re-read the thread.. i have already done that.. i also know how to check it... read the thread next time before you act like you know what the problem is
Another thing that is wrong with your responce is that there are two small holes, on the left side of the inside of the TB.. the FITV is the bottom one... there should be suction from the top one at idle in any temp...
I dont want to spray my hoses with soapy water to find the leak.. this si such a big leak that if i do find it with soapy water, my engine is going to inhale soapy water into th cylinders.. last time i checked water, and soap do not burn....

this thing revs up to 4000 RPMs when at idle... it is not the FITV... my guess is there is a leak in my intake manifold gasket... any other ideas?

dont have an OBD-I scanner around at the moment... the only flash code i get is the IACV one because its unplugged so im not actually idling at 4K
I do too belive that it is the intake manifold gasket... i cant think of anything else that would allow it to idle so high. im going to try and totally plug my TB by putting my hand over it to see if the amount of intake air is enough to keep it running with no air through the TB... the other reason i think its the gasket is because i have literally almost NO manifold vacuum... my breaks get REAL hard after about 3 full pumps of the petal, but then return after driving it for about another minute.
im back up at school now and do not have the facilities or tools to fix it up here.. will have to wait another 3 weeks..

You need to re-read what you wrote...
All you said is that you took apart and cleaned your FITV and that you plugged the holes when the engine was cold. You didn't write anything about properly checking the FITV.
I did read the entire thread prior to responding. You were just unclear.

i have properly checked the FITV i guess i just did not make it clear in the post.. however i did say...

and regaurdless with the whole TB plugged (put hand over TB) the engine still runs.. think about that... it should not be running...

maybe the intake manifold is loose. vibration is a kik in the pants. fitv will only make the engine surge unless the iacv is shot anyways. your map shows near atmospheric pressure while idling!
yep intake manny gasket is what it seems to be accross the board... ill change it here the first of may (when i get home) and ill lte you guys know. thanks guys!
well i will be taking mine off this Saturday and will keep you guys up informed... it really has sucked driving around like this... I'm sure I'm going to have to replace my clutch this summer as well because i only can drive and let the clutch out like around 3-4 grand... i really hope i can fix it this weekend
Yup, problem fixed!
It WAS the intake manifold gasket... it was sucked in by the engine at the 2nd cylinder runner. slapped on a new Flepro gasket and tightened everything down and she purrs oh so nicely now!!
the thing that had happened was when i took it off before i never put the bottom two nuts on (because there hard to get to) and i was in a hurry... so anyways i got ALL the nuts on this time and it runs real nice now!! just need to change my oil because of how rich it was running and all the blow by i was having from a shitty running engine.. and well be good! thanks for all the advice everyone!
another thing that was loose (not sure if it happened when i took the manifold off or just cuz...) but the PCV can (call it as you may) was out of the block... ??
Thanks Again everyone!
