Default JDM Center DSP speaker(s) setup

I've got a question for all the people with this speaker. I know some of you have them, I've seen the awesome pictures!

(picture for those losers that don't know what I'm talking about: http://www.marklemmons.com/files/prelude001.jpg )

I've got the center speaker unit last week, and there's no way I'd be able to install it myself since I have to cut a hole in my dash. I checked my local shop and they said it may take them from 2 hours to all day. They took a look at it and was concerned about how it'd secure, along with how to hook it up. (since two speakers, left and right speaker?) They were also concerned about the clearance above the air vents. Is there enough space? Or will they have to cut into it, leaking air behind my dash? They also said it'd be roughly 150-200 bucks for the install, but if they have to take the dash off it could get up into the 400+ area...which is no good for me...

So my questions to those who know:

-How does it secure to the dash? It's got factory clips on the unit, but do they clip to the USDM dash?
-How should they hook it up since there's no center output, left and right?
-How's the clearance above the vents? Will they need to cut into them?
-How much did you pay to have it installed? (if you didn't do it yourself)
-How long did it take them to do it?
-If you did it yourself, how much work was it?
-Did you/will they have to take the dash off? Or can they just pull the vents out to cut the hole?

Thanks guys!

-Mark

PS: if you got pics of your setup, post em!

If I were you, I'd take a good look at the thing and figure out how it mounts up....why can't you just do it yourself??

Cutting a hole in the dash isn't that big of a deal man, really.

Just out of curiosity, where did you go for that price?? I live in raleigh too....I'm just hoping you didn't go to phantasm lol

they shouldn't have to take the dash off, If you take out the climate controls and vents, there should be enough access there. I think there is a template stamped underneath the dash where you ahve to cut. I'll have to check once I get home since my dash is out.

Also the clips should just clip onto the dash.

take out your center A/C vents (and climate control) and there are two areas for cut outs, like blank option spaces. cut those out exactly, and run the wires either to the radio or a the VTEC amp harness, and the DSP speakers drop and clip right in
good luck, nice upgrade

Thanks guys.

@mgags7: I live up in North Raleigh, by Wake Forest. I'll be going to C.A.R Audio & Security off Capital for the install. I'm not doing it myself because if I screwed up, I'd kill myself. (not literally)

Well I got installed. They tapped it into the left and right doors because I don't have a center channel and all that yet, and don't really want to pay as much as it's going to cost to get all of that quite yet. But it sounds pretty good. I still need to replace my two rear 6.5" factory speakers. (haha, I probably should have done those first eh?)

But the original DSP unit was gray so they painted it Honda black to match the rest of my interior, and it looks awesome! I'll take pics soon, hopefully. You guys were right in that there were two square 'templates' where it needs to be cut, and the factory 10ohm/10watt speakers barely fit over the A/C unit.

Has anyone replaced these speakers with better ones? Or at least would some good tweaters sound betteR?

I told them about the rear center 6x9 sub and how most usually replace it with a regular 6x9 speaker (you guys do do that right? I've only got an 96 si so I have none of the cool stuff...) But the guy there said he's seen it before and it doesn't sound good. To just forget the unit (sub or speaker) and just get good speakers in the back and get a sub(s) and put it in the trunk. Anyone have any opinions on that one?

GET THOSE PICS UP!

I know kicker made a 6x9 sub that could fit there, several people have commented on how it sounds nice with a small amp. You could go w/ a regular 6x9 back there (like I have, i don't even have mine hooked up..lol) it sounds decent, but I don't have anything to run mine off of, (why it's not hooked up). I've also seen someone put an 8" sub where the 6x9 goes. Dont go crazy with the weight on those sub(s) you may put in the trunk.

really? where? I've looked around quite a bit for a 6x9 sub and haven't been to successful. Only one i've ever found was like a $300 one. Do you happen to know where to get this kicker one?

I believe that kicker discontinued them, and yes, they were quite expensive. I'll look around though

I just sold one 6x9 kicker free air sub for dirt cheap on ebay. It was an 8ohm and worked good. I have 2 more and am using one of them in my car. Unless, someone can convince me to sell both of them and I'll just buy a 6x9 speaker to put back there for bass.

Haha, sorry guys. I don't have a camera, just a camera phone...and I don't have the cable to hook up to the pc. I think my room mate has a camera though, so I'll get him to take some pics of it or something...or I'll steal it. Either way, pics should be soon, hopefully.

But it's been a couple days now and it's still working! haha. Was definitely worth it

awesome I thought it was bigger than that. Turned out pretty good, what size speakers are in those? and they sound good you say? ... I'm going to look into that because i have 2 lil dents on my dash right there where some dumbass kept hitting his dash to get his a/c working before I fixed it.

Nope it's pretty small. But fits and looks perfect.

The speakers are about 2.5-3 inches. They worked fine with no crackling but once they go I'll just replace them with tweeters.

They sound decent, it didn't add that much sound. The unit is mostly for looks. The factory speakers just aren't powerful/big enough to make a huge difference, but I sitll like them.
