AFAIK, the Falken Ziex ZE-512 is not discontinued. However, the Kumho ASX is better in every way.

The ASX isn't necessarily more money than the ZE-512, either. Of course, the price depends on the size (as well as the dealer). Comparing prices between the ZE-512 from Vulcan and the ASX from the Tire Rack, you'll find that in some sizes (e.g. 205/50-15) the ZE-512 costs less, in others (e.g. 205/50-16) the ASX costs less, and in still others (e.g. 195/55-15) they're almost identical.
Bottom line: get the ASX.

Maybe they are; I don't know. But I've heard plenty of stories about tire shops claming that a certain tire is discontinued when it's not, but they are trying to sell tires they stock rather than ones they would have to order (or, heaven forbid, someone should want a brand they don't carry). And they're still available from web dealers like Discount Tire and Vulcan Tire, and they're still shown on the Falken website. All of which leads me to believe they are probably not discontinued.

what about the ecsta spt? is it noticeably better than the asx? according to kumho's website the asx and spt have pretty similar specs other than the spt have 3/4 the wear rating of the asx. tirerack.com sells the spt for cheaper than the asx, except that shipping for the spt's will cost more for me (nearest wearhouse is out of stock); basically, either set will cost about the same. is the lower wear rating worth the increased grip or not?

All-season tires are designed for people who have to use the same tire in occasional snow as in moderate to warm temperatures the rest of the year. The Kumho ASX is an excellent all-season tire for a bargain price.
Summer tires are designed for people who never need to use them in snow, either because they live in a warm climate or because they have a separate set of tires for winter use. Summer tires usually grip much better than all-season tires (as long as the temperatures are above freezing), but do poorly in snow. The Kumho SPT is an excellent summer tire for a bargain price.
If you need to use these tires in snow in the winter, get the all-season ASX; otherwise, get the summer SPT.
