Scary stuff
Guy brought his car over for me to work on his headers, he caught one of them on the trailer while loading his car.
Well I was looking at the car and found some scary stuff. It is a mustang first off, 410ci, ported everything, should run around 5.80's in the 1/8th at a little over 3000#.
Anyway, here are some pictures of the brackets holding the motor plate on, and some pictures of the welds on the cage. It has already been inspected and passed.
Here is a link to the directory.

I just hope he never wrecks the thing.

Damn, i wonder if getting a chassis cert sticker is like getting an inspection sticker if you know the right people? I can't imagine anybody actually looking over that cage and deciding it was safe.
i tried explaining this scenero to a guy about a year back. i told him that most tech inspectors only look at point placement, and if its welded completely around the tube, it usually passes. he didnt believe me though, he argued that they are very strict on the weld quality. just goes to prove it.

Thats brutal, somebody should rig a cage up with puddy or sumthing, paint it and see if it passes. And if it does take it to the legal level. That is terrible.

Brutal. I was recently at the mercy of the tech inspector for nhra.
Certified my cage happily, failed 3 of the ones that showed. He was
looking with a flashlight, the whole nine yards.
Even heard him say to the one guy;" I can't pass something like this"
I have heard it both ways. Some of these guys that try to do it themselves
are just brutal. As stated, last place to scrimp.
That guy's life is at risk in an accident. When the welds split, the tubes will be like weapons inside the cab.

I think I may have this one beat. I had a customer about three years ago that bought a Vega Wagon that ran a 540 CID Chevy and was running 1/8th and 1/4" for a few years. The original owner and his brother built the car in their driveway.
My customer/friend bought it really sight unseen, saw it through pictures. Gets the car delivered to his house and was excited about the car that he didn't see the flaws because of the nice paint job.
Loose wheel studs and also the knurls were stripped

Aluminum fuel line and battery cable rubbing suspension and frame

unsupported fuel and brake lines

Holes on both sides of the frame rails!

Guess is as good as mine?

Guessing the car was stick welded and then re welded with wire to make tech?

More

Gawd there is more!

Customer paid to much for the car, had to gut the frame and cage and repair the frame and do a new 10 point cage with a new floor. The front suspension was just as bad, lower strut rods for the control arms had broken frame brackets and were held together with about a 1/2" of bird crap stick welding. Car was and is still the most dangerous thing I have ever seen to date!

Looks like he thought he could just go a buy the cheapest little 110v mig welder at homedepot and built a drag car. If he were to ever blow a tire going down the track with that set up, man, I dont know if he would live or not.
