I know you'll hear a ticking , and have poor fuel economy but what else would also tell you if your valves just need a little adjustment? (or rather if its something major)
My car sputters at idle with small misfires occasionally.

the sputtering you are hearing is a misfire most likely. check out your spark plugs to start.

 

eh, had a valve adjustment, checked plugs, wires, cap, rotors good, still misfiring occasionally. alot less with adjustment
