Re: Did I F-up my car?
Whats up techers..........Gotta a question...
Every time in the past when I've done a oil change, I have used my friends jack, well finally I bought my own Craftsman floor jack and stands.
Anyway so last night I finished my oil-change, and attempted to lower my car , very slowly of course. First the floor jack starts to go down slow and then BAM!, the car slams to the ground. The damn jack slid further under my car, scratched my header, broke through the water guard, and who knows what else. I thought for a second that it was stuck, but I was able to retrieve the damn jack.
I should have used my leg for more support, but it was late and I was tired.
Anyway, I raised the car again and did a visual inspection, and nothing seems to be damaged, but my question here is that with the force that the car came down on, is it possible that I may have damaged something, motor, axles, etc? or am I just being too extreme here?
The car drove fine afterwards, just a slight burning smell, but that could just be from the oil that leaked onto the header.
Thanks

i don't know how you released the vavle on the jack stand ,but a good rule of thumb is to let off a little bit, and when the car starts to lower, tighten it back up just a wee bit so it doesn't lower all @ one time. your car is heavy, and if u release all the pressure from the vavle on the jack stand, of course the car is gonna slam on top of it.
any damage should be visually inspected. CV probably refers to the CV boots, or CV joint.
if you think you can do it rite, jack it up again, and take a look around.
if you think your jack is faulty, test it on a raised car (like anywhere on your street), and try to drop the car slowly when it's raised. if your jack just slams the car again, it could be your jack is busted up. i wouldn't EVER trust going under a car with a broken jack, cuz that could spell DEATH. be careful, and test it out on a raised, stock height car. if the jack slams the car down, it won't damage anything on a raised, stock height car.
good luck!
