Default 2001 CRV SE

Hello.
So, my commute just shortened tremendously and I was thinking about trading in the Mazda 3 wagon for a little SUV. I'd be primarily using a vehicle for some camping, hauling bikes, and a few road trips...and commuting in the winter time.

I was thinking about going back to a Honda and was looking at some CRVs. I found a few 01 SE models for under $12k. I know the basic drivetrain; B20, RT awd, 4AT, etc... I would like some insight from owners of CRVs from 99-02(second iteration of the first gen). The two that I found are around 70-80k miles and are at dealer lots. Not a big fan of being hosed on trade-in even though the Mazda is paid off.

I don't need all the nice stuff of the SE, but seems like a good value. Would I be better off finding an 02+ LX for around the same price?

Hi the 01's were a good year. They had the beefier engine that the '99-. The SE is a good model from what I remember. My wife had a '98 ex and she loved it. We still talk to the people that bought it. that'd be a good choice. Not the best gas mileage, but not the worst!

The 99 - 01 were stepped up in horse power to 140 and the 02 were the beginning of the 160 hp.

I own an 01 CR-V.1 and am happy but if you can find a V.2 for a good price you might appreciate the little extra roominess and horse power. Just be careful on the V.2 as there were some issuses regarding the A/C compressors going and costing a few bucks to repair the A/C system.

Good luck.

If you have to get a 02+ LX to stay within budget make sure you realize the differences between the LX and EX. I just purchased an 03 EX for my wife. We were looking at a LX for cost savings obviously but when I found out the LX does not have abs it wasn't a hard decision for me to get her the EX. What is the point of AWD in a LX if you don't have ABS... just my 0.02....

My family is in the same boat pretty much: we've decided on a CRV, but it's still a toss up between the later 1st gens (no older than 2000), and the 2nd gen. What are the pluses/minuses of both generations. I heard about crazy short gearing on 1st gen 5spds, and the 04' 5spd that we test drove was pretty noisey on the highway.

theres a huge complaint about road noise for hondas. i won't deny that my family's cr-v doesn't have road noise, but the cr-v is a great versatile car.

1. good size/roomy
2. good mpg (25mpg mixed driving here 4spd auto)
3. good resale value
4. good ergonomics

as for ur comparison of the V2 1st gen and 2nd gen... i'd opt for the 2nd gen. the K24 is worth it. considering the b20 is "only" 2.0L moving over 3400lbs.

That doesn't make sense. The awd is to help get moving, and the abs is to help stop. If you live in an area where it doesn't snow and you don't go off roading, there reallly is no need for the awd. But the abs is a good safety feature on wet or dry pavement.

Actually I hate driving a car with ABS in the snow. If I want my brakes not to lock, I'll pump them myself. Most recently, this winter, I was driving down hill behind a Scion xB (standard ABS and TCS) and when we came to an intersection, he simply couldn't stop. By having keeping the wheels on the edge of adhesion, rather than having them lock/unlock rapidly (ABS) I stopped fine, even with terrible all seasons on.

I do agree about how pointless AWD is in a dry climate if no offroading is involved.
