Weird speaker problem, crackling/popping
When turned up near or to the max, both speakers give out a semi-constant crackle. I changed the balance to the right and turned up the volume, sounds perfectly fine. Balance to the left = crackle.
Speakers aren't blown. It sounds more like bad reception on the radio, not distortion or anything.
Should I tackle the headunit or the wiring first?
Details:
Aftermarket headunit
Wiring has been changed
Stock speakers

it's prolly the stock speakers but you need to make sure. you said that they only break up upon approaching full volume. near full volume on 99.9% of radios (stock or aftermarket) you are trying to force the radio to put out more power when it cannot. after a certain volume level...you are not able to go any louder but you CAN still turn up the ****. after this certain volume level you are no longer going to get any louder but all you are doing is adding distortion into the signal line.
double check the resistance on all of your speakers by checking the wires behind the radio...make sure they are close in impedance to each other. as you stated...if you balance to one side...it's ok...this sounds like at least one of the speakers is on it's way out.
what kind of deck are you running?
