Default headunit help.

today when i installed one of my old headunits (alpine cda-7892) in my beater i ran into a weird problem. the back speakers work fine (stock) but when i hook the front speakers (cdt ef-61) up the sound completely cuts out until the fronts are disconnected. im pretty stumped on this problem since the headunit is correctly installed, and there are no shorts in any of the wiring. it almost seems like the internal amp is getting overloaded. any suggestions?

Sounds like a short to me, are you sure you checked for one correctly? Have you tried another HU?
