Default Culprits for VTEC not working properly....wat are they?

Like the post says, my brother in law's 95 GSR has no VTEC. For some reason today it stopped working. Problem is, we cant figure out what it is because the car is not turning on the check engine light and its not flashing any codes. My question is, wat else could cause VTEC not to work. I dont think it would be the VTEC solenoid itself because those arent a common to go bad.....

Can anyone point is in the right direction as to what it could be?

Thanx guys.

Engine temp too low, not enough oil pressure, engine has to be at a certain RPM, clogged vtec solenoid screen

how do you know it's not working?

there are certain conditions before vtec will engage:

- engine up to temp
- above certain throttle position
- enough oil pressure
- above certain speed

and some more im probably forgetting

Ummmm I'm not entirely sure, I've only seen it done a couple of times. I'm remembering it being pretty straight forward, you take off the vtec solenoid and there is a little screen in there. Its like a secondary oil filter, and I'm assuming it is where the oil line goes into the solenoid or something to that effect.

Unplug and unbolt the solenoid by the valve cover. The gasket will have a mesh screen imbedded. Make sure it is clear of debris. When clean, re install and see if you have VTEC again.

Well, we put more oil in it cuz it was low, but the VTEC still did not engage. So now, I do not know wat it is...I'm going to take off the solenoid and clean it and see what happens.

Def clean the screen and post back. But, was the oil recently flushed, if not, dirty oil might be the culprit.
