Looking on 2002 Acura TL type-S...Sugesstions on common problems to look for?
Hey! I am looking on a 2002 Acura TL type-S with 90k miles. What are good prices on these? Is there any common trouble spots on these cars?
I know on the CLs they have transmission problems sometimes. How can I tell with this car? does it have transmission issues as well?
What should I look for?
It has 90k miles on it. Can these cars have mileage roll back? or they does these cars have digital odometers?
I am newb to these cars. Thanks!

Trans issues are very common, some seat heater issues(faulty heater grids), day/night mirror leakage/inop, t belt tensioner and 2nd gear jet kit recall on certain models. A VIN stat at the Acura dealer will tell you more about the trans issues(if a reman'd trans was installed) and if there are any open recalls. Visit an Acura dealer for a VIN status report. Other than these problems they are good cars. hth

first off,
There is no trans recall, there is however an extended warranty for 109K or 7 years 9 months whichever comes first on all 2001 and 2002 CL type S and certain 2003 CL type S along with the CL /TL and TL type S. 2004+ cars have a new trans design or a modified one that seems to hold up fairly well (acura does have a 4 shaft 5at in use on SOME cars)
you can repair the heater yourself by replacing the burnt out wire with some new thicker guage wire.
you can also register the car with acura ownerlink to find any warrantee work.
you can call an acura dealer and they may or may not have repair history on the car but Acura CS should.
If you do decide to call your local acura dealer do it before you buy the car and ask at least the 3 following q's
1. in service date?
2. salvage titled?
3. any trans work?
other issues with the car in addition to those mentioned above
dash rattles
sunroof opens up only 2/3 of the way and is noisey
turn off VSA and you get torque steer like MAD and tire shredding with ease
BOSE audio (yeah it sounds just like my 98 accord only louder)
OPDS dies

Occupant Position Detection System used to figure out how to deploy airbags.... when it dies it disables the SRS system.
VSA is Vehicle Stability Assist and when you spin your tires (easy to do in this car) it cuts throttle and applies the brake(s) to the spinning wheel(s) (CL type S only as regular CL have TCS and ABS)

The trans recall involved insufficient lubrication to 2nd gear, hence the oil jet kit that is installed at the dealer. The trans recall and warranty extension resolve 2 different problems. The OPDS unit has a warranty extension as well. Good luck with your choice.
The carfax turned out that the car had a salvage title from a flood. The guy was trying to trick me.

well, I wont be able to afford a TL anytime soon. I am in schoool. The guy was trying to trade me the TL for my Prelude. I knew it was "too good to be true" so I kept my cool and didnt get anxious, but I asked him over and over if the title was clear and even specifically if it had salvage title or anything like that, and he said NO. He did not seem hesitant to give me the vin, so I thought he was at least honest in that part. Carfax showed me that it had flood damage and salvage title twice, by him and the previous owner. He still claims that it has a 'clean' title even after I told him that I saw it on carfax. He claims that he got it traded for a Prelude though, so I guess he tricked someone who didnt use carfax. I will forever use carfax
(even though, after I bought my 94 Accord in 2002, in the year 2004, carfax finally showed that it had an accident from 95 that was not reported to carfax until after I bought it. My Accord is still good though.

Acura will NOT honor any warranty of a Salvage titled car. Since the trans was flooded, it will die soon. You should kick that lying bastard in his nuts the next time you see him....
best bet is to run VIN past isurance agent as they will definately know if car is salvage titled
