How much gas am I going to lose while replacing my fuel pump?
I'm replacing it right now. I took the large bolt off the top of the pump, the thing that holds the line on, and it just leaks... and leaks... and leaks... I'm afraid I'm gonna lose a couple gallons of gas during the whole process. I relieved fuel pressure at the fuel rail (there was none) and opened the gas cap.
Is this supposed to happen? Will it stop?

when i did my fuel pump, i didn't even relieve the pressure @ the fuel rail OR gas cap, and when i undid the banjo bolt, it leaked a little bit but nothing too major.
prolly a couple tablespoons, but not gallons.

Well I got the old one out, and it only leaked a few oz, like you said.
Now i'm trying to get the new one in. It won't go all the way in. It looks like there's a hole in the bottom of the gas tank that I have to aim it for. Any advice on sinking it down that last inch?

Wow, I replaced my fuel pump but I had to take out the back seat brace to do it. That meant disconnecting a bunch of audio equipment as well. What a pain in the ***! That was possibly the most frustrating, infuriating and unenjoyable experience I've had working on my car, especially under pressure of daylight. Mods, excuse me for a second while I vent my frustration...
FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHCK!
Anyway, it runs, and I can drive to work tomorrow. Next weekend when I have time I can reinstall the back seat brace.

That sounds worse than when I had a blowout at 3 in the morning an hour away from home in the middle of nowhere and had a full-size spare but didn't have my jack in the trunk.
Way worse.

The 1st time, I just swapped it out & lost only a few drops. The 2nd time(checked a loose ground) disconnected the main relay w/engine on to kill off the pump & clear the fuel line & went from there.
