Default Need help - Lining up cam gears and crank.

My mechanic is resintalling the timing belt. When he lines up the crank, and the two cam gears, the belt is off by about half a tooth. This is with the Jun cam gears. Both gears are set at 0 degrees

The skunk2 gears that I had originally did not have this problem. Any suggestions on why the belt would be off by half a tooth?

milled head or block can cause that, as can a thinner head gasket

Head has not been milled, neither has the block, we are using an OEM three layer head gasket.....

Shoot me some more ideas

hehehe,

Well, I am having him try the stock gears to see if it lines up. If it doesn't then I know that something is wrong. I'll keep you posted SGT.

Usually when headwork has been performed, as in your case, they resurface(mill) the head a little bit to make sure it is straight.
also, there is a possiblility that the cam gears are off a little bit, which is not uncommon.

Easy way to make sure that it is not the camgears that are off is to remove them and put them face to face, having both keyways alined, check if all the marks are at the same place one versus the other and if the teeth of both camgears are line up. If they are, and you are saying that no head work was done or that the gasket is the same thickness then stock, then something is wrong with your set-up. If something is off on one of the camgears then you have to compensate by readjusting both camshafts by half the difference.

Half a tooth? Depress the tensioner after installing the belt properly:
Crank - Tensioner - Water pump - Exhaust Pulley - Intake Pulley
Get it all the way to Ex pulley and using your other hand, depress the tensioner. That should free up enough slack for you to get it on. In most cases, its your lining up that is off a bit. Eyes can play tricks on you when you are staring at 2 small lines. Good luck.
