Default Painting Oil Cap

So I went to paint my oil cap(sanded the surface lightly first), and the oil cap doesn't want to be painted. The paint does stick, it just runs down and its just horrible. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to paint an oil cap properly?

just buy a colored one if you REALLY need a color oil cap
