Tranny Woes! Clutch Causing Damges! Check it Out y0!
Well I seem to have THE most wonderful luck with my Type R tranny.
It all started about 7 months ago when I broke 4 teeth off of my countershaft. I replaced the shaft with a new one from ATS as part of the ATS 4.929FD set.
I bought all new bearings, seals, and of course, replaced the broken part with a stronger ATS piece. I also added the .787 GS-R 5th gear for good RPMS on the freeway and top speed in a pinch
Upon taking the car down the street for the 2nd time right after the ATS install, my clutch went to the floor and did not return.
Upon yanking the tranny back out we found that the 3-month old ACT Xtreme Pressure plate had SHATTERED. With no time to be down any longer, I pulled a brand new ClutchNet Double Diaphram Pressure Plate and 6-puck 6-spring disc from our shelves - we stock them at the shop I work at.
Put the new clutch in and drove the cars around for about one month with absolutely NO problems.
I then yanked the entire ITR swap out of my car and sold the car and bought alighter CX and used the last 7 months to create my dreamhatch.
ANYWAYS, fast forward to last week and my car gets finally finished. Whenever I try to shift quickly from 2nd to 3rd, 3rd gear either locks me out or grinds sometimes. It's really very annoying, and I am not sure what was going on - until now.
I have another friend whith a fulkly built GS-R motor and he bought a BRAND NEW crate ITR tranny. He ran the same ClutchNet set-up and his 3rd began to grind within 2 months.
He had the tranny pulled and upon removing the clutch and flywheel, what did he find?
A RUINED ITR flywheel. The ceramic pucks on the disc were so strong that they didn;t wear out, but the FLYWHEEL did!
So I now am faced with having to pull the tranny out AGAIN!
So here's where YOU guys can help please:
Which flywheel would be best to go with? JUN or Toda? Who has them, and what makes you love them?
I am also switching to a milder disc too, because I'm not shelling out big bucks for a chromoly flywheel only to ruin it too within a few months.
So where did you guys get your flywheels and how much did they cost?
Thanks for reading, and stay away from the ceramic-pucked discs from any manufacturer!
BTW:
I still think ClutchNet is bad-***, but their ceramic-pucked discs are a little too crazy on the flywheel for street usage

I am probably mistaken but I could've sworn a long time ago I read that those flywheels are for the JDM market and can hurt you in time if you use them for USDM apps. hmm...more research needed
ask in the ITR forum, there are a lot of Toda/Comptech/Spoon/Fidanza flywheel users in that forum
so you're bound to get good feedback

Yeah Owen, I asked there too.
Seems like I'm black-listed over there because I don't have an ITR though...

my friend has a toda flywheel and exedy clutch in his itr and is extremely happy with it and said the only other way he would go would be spoon because for some odd reason the spoon flywheels are cheaper than the toda's dont ask me why but he got the flywheel from http://www.randdmotorsports.com talk to dave he is cool. thanks

I'd stick with Clutchmasters of Fidanza... you can get them as cheap as $250.... much more reasonable than that JDM stuff.

i personally dont have the toda peice but know of 4 people who run them with exedy clutches and have zero complaints, plus its not too expensive.
It's probably the way you drive.
I've been in the car with you a few times and there really isn't a reason to rip every gear as hard as you do.
If the flywheel is good I'd bet on the synchro's. Mine do it only when I shift hard.
You can still be quick without the lightning fast shifting.

Well, like I said before the friend with the grinding 3rd on the BRAND NEW ITR tranny had his problem solved by dropping in the new flywheel that didn't have a 3/4 inch groove in it, so I'm prety sure mine has the same problem.
Trey:
With the ATS FD I do not even shift hard anymore because the wheels would only spin through 2nd if I did, and I was actually being gentle on the tranny before I pulled everything out of the car to sell the car.
Since getting back on the road I noticed that unless I really stuff it in 3rd really HARD or shift really slow, that 3rd can lock me out of grind.
Also, with very light pressure on the gear shift lever while in 3rd it has actually popped out twice now! You know how you're gettign ready for the 3-4 shift, right? Well, when my hand is applying a slight pressure on the lever in preparation for the 3-4 shift it happened then...
Oh well...

I would go with he Toda flywheel because the teeth on the starter match up to the flywheel unlike JUN where every time you turn on the car it grindes you can fix this by filling down te starter but who wants to do that I am putting a Toda clutch and flywheel in my B18C5 real soon (soon as it comes in) Toda
