Car audio question
Hello, I have a '94 Accord and would be thankful for some advice on troubleshooting a problem I have with the factory stereo.
My stereo does not turn on, nor does the electric aerial rise when I go to turn the stereo on. Since both are using the same fuse, I thought that it may have been a blown fuse, but replacing the fuse did nothing.
I have noticed while driving at night, that the lights inside the stereo buttons still light up when the headlights are on.
So it seems to me that power is still reaching the stereo, but it will not turn on.
What I would like to do is ditch the factory unit and replace it with a new unit. But I am unsure whether the fault is with the stereo or in the car's electrics. I am not interested in repairing the existing stereo but would like to know if the problem would prevent a new stereo from running as well.
I guess that there could be a million possible causes, but I hope that this is enough information for someone to help me with.
Thank you

one option you can use is to ask a friend if they have a spare deck laying around that you can use, buy the adapter harness for your car and do a partial install just to see if everything works, if it's good, go out and buy the deck you really want and do the full install.
I only changed the interior fuse. I was not aware that there might be a second fuse in the engine bay. I will have to take a look at that.
Thank you for pointing this out.

no.
look in your under the hood fuse box. theres a 7.5a fuse in there. replace it and your radio will be back to good. im assuming your cig. lighter doesn't work either

Now it all makes sense!
As a stopgap measure until I bought a new stereo, I had been using a mp3 transmitter that plugged into the cigarette lighter. And not being a smoker, I was not aware that my cigarette lighter was not working once my stereo failed.
So it would seem at some point that the mp3 transmitter probably blew the fuse - it did have a habit of heating up.
I replaced a blown 15A fuse (I live in New Zealand and have a Japanese import, so maybe the fuse configurations vary) and it solved the problem.
Thank you to the previous poster (sony224422) for helping me connect the dots. And to everyone for providing advice.
It now seems safe enough to get a new stereo after all.
Thanks again.
