Default tranny help

ok i can't shift into 5th or reverse because i can't find the gears with the shifter. the gears i can get into i can still wobble the shifter all over the place while still in gear (there's ridiculous play). I've changed the shifter to a cheap knock out shifter with a good bearing and it seems to work better, but still lots of play and can't get into 5th or reverse.

change shift rods next? or tranny problem?

the bushings on the stabalizer bar have either fell out or deteriated or the pin that holds the shifter to the tranny is worn/loose

i just barely put in brand new es shifter bushings and believe me the pin is in real tight...I'm guessing it might be from a bump/dip i hit because of how low my car is...maybe it bent the shift rods? or would it be a tranny problem? any other input would help...thanks

if you hit a bump your exhaust would be crushed if it got to the rods. take the shift rod out of the tranny and try to get it to go in reverse . you should be able to turn it right and push in and thats reverse if i remember correctly, just keep trying you will get

so if i take off the rods and move the little knuckle into reverse then its gotta be my rods thats messed up for sure...thanks for the input guys.

the exhaust pipes only get lower than the rods near the shifter end of the rods, but the exhaust pipes are higher than the rods on the tranny side so thats where I'm thinking it would hit on a bump is near the front of the car.

check to see if your shifter is in right. one time i put my short shifter in backwards and i had the same problem. you could put it in gear and still wobble the shifter all over the place.

the weird thing about the shifter is that the stock one has a longer bolt length than the short shifter i bought. when i put on the short shifter i had to really tighten the bolt to make sure it wasn't loose. i guess i'll check it again, but won't have time til later this weekend.

oh and shifter is in right for sure

ok i took off the shift linkage (disconnected rods from tranny) used a screwdriver to move around in gears and still can't get into reverse. also when it is in gear the is still some play between the gears exactly like how it was with the shifter connected.

i guess this means im looking into getting a new tranny?

does anyone know how much it would cost to rebuild a tranny for my situation? i hear it's better to rebuild than to buy some used one for the price you pay

i doubt you can get it rebuilt for what a used one cost, just go to a trans shop and get a qoute and compare to the cost of use ones

well the tranny i have is a 97 type r inside a 96gsr case. i love the lsd (even though it's stock) and the close gear ratio, except i hate the high revs on the freeway. that's why i was wondering about rebuilding it...maybe a custom tranny build. i hear ls 5th gear is the most favorable way to go, but if it costs too much i would rather buy used and swap in my lsd.
