I don't know if it's a reliability issue with the actual retainer, I think most people swap out to the titanium since they weigh half as much which is better when you're revving higher and lifting higher simultaneously.

Yes, you can, unless the manufacturer specifically states otherwise. In fact, by using the OEM retainers, you avoid some of the potential problems that titanium retainers can present, though you sacrifice the weight savings.
