Can someone please tell me about 15w 50? I got some on accident from a friend. I won a bet and didn't realize it was 15w 50. I usually use Mobil 1 10w 30.

 

I use Motul 6100 fully synthetic!.....made for racecars for racecars!...lol!

There's a reason the engine calls for 5W-30. The engineers want the oil to get moving more quickly at start up. I'd use what the manufacturer recommends. Mobil 1 5W-30 will work just fine in all temperature areas. As for the 15W-40, it's going to be thicker when cold and when hot. That's going to help the oil stick to certain parts, but it's also going to be more resistive to flow. For street use, I'd avoid 15W-40, especially in cold weather. However, using it for one oil change in the summer won't hurt anything. 5W-30 is just the better choice. The engine designers figure out lurbrication requirements when they design an engine. If they can design such a wonderful engine, don't you think they can pick out the best oil for it. The wrong lubrication can cause the engine to fail prematurely, which doesn't look good on those engineers. It's something we engineers take very seriously.

 

I read some threads here about the bad things of Mobil 1, I've been using it for like 4 years on my R. It doesn't burn any oil unless I'm on the track. Now, I wonder anyone on this forum know if there is a lab test on the common oil. I remember Car & Driver did some oil tests like 6-7 years ago.....

 

Ditto. I've used Mobil 1 since 3750 miles on my R (now has 40K). I have NEVER burned a drop of oil. I have NEVER had to top of oil between oil changes. And, this includes at least 8 track events and 15+ autocrosses.

At its new price, I will not buy Mobil 1 any longer (it is >$5 a qt here now..even at Target!). Plus, in my new car I am only allowed to use Castrol Synthetic, 10w60!!

It isnt a crock, unfortunately. Use one of the two non-approved oils and BMW will not honor warranty claims related to the oil. Remember, I am not talking about Acura/Honda here, I am talking about BMW ///M cars.

 

I use 3 qts of Mobil 1 10-30 and the other 3/4 is 15-50,and i use the rest to top of if needed.

 

What??? Know one use’s Amsoil?? It’s only the best synthetic oil on the market.

Amsoil High Performance 10w-40. There is no substitute!!!

but I dumped it in favor of other oils (Mobil 1) and shiiiiiiiiiiet.... shouldn't have...

At the Honda dealer! Packaging can be different. I think even the content may be different. Costs about 8 USD per liter.

 

why don't you just let the dealer service it for the first 3 years? that's why you spent so much on a BMW, use the free service...

If you read the whole thread, you would see that I stated that I drive the car more aggressively (MUCH MORE) than most typical BMW drivers (I like the track and autox). Recommended oil change interval is 15K miles, which is what is covered. I would like to change oil and filter ever 7500 miles, which is more on the conservative side and will not be covered under the 3 yr/36K Mile included maintenance.

I ran amsoil 0w-20 in my ls... i run Rotella (diesel oil) in my boosted b16

 

I run mobil1 fully synthetic 10w30

 

i just get the oil from "lovers package" near our mall.

oh wait, we're talking about car oil.. uhhhh

I've been using Mobile 1 5W-30 Tri-Synthetic - and have maybe 3 bottles left in the garage, I went to Walmart today hoping to buy 2 more of the "old" stuff to use on my next oil change but it looks like it has all been pulled off the shelf for the new Super-Syn..

Can you mix these oils or do I have 3 bottles of the "old" formula that will do me no good?
