Default Shipping engine, transmission, etc... any really GOOD ideas? *searched*

Honda Tech,

EDIT: I don't know if i posted this in the right place, though i've posted this elsewhere. mods, if you want to delete this, i'm cool with that. sorry in advance if i look like an ***.

I'll be shipping out my B18C5, JDM tranny, Fluidyne radiator, Injen Intake, axles, and shift linkage all at once over about 1500 miles... do any of you have good ideas on how to ship this all?

Different options I've heard of:

1. Use a wooden pallet, place all your stuff on it and build a "box" around it while securing everything inside.
2. Use large plastic tubs, place the items in them and secure them with some sort of packing material and/or expandable styrofoam, and ziptie the lids (if i did this, i guess i would need to place it all on a pallet to be shipped)
3. Build a wooden crate around the engine (since i've got quite a few things to ship, i don't know how feasible this would be)
4. Use a wooden pallet and use some sort of industrial "packing gun" of some sort to secure the items on the pallet

right now, i think i'll be going with option 1. any bright ideas?

I would ship the radiator seperate since its easy to damage. Everything else, put it on a pallet, wrap it in plastic and have them pick it up..

what kind of plastic are you referring to if you don't mind my asking (those 1-foot in diameter saran-wrap-like stuff?) ... and how do you secure everything to the pallet to begin with? rope? good idea on the radiator... i thought about that, too.

Yes.

I would go buy a generic little ratchet strap and go from corner to corner, then saran wrap everything. You can actually secure it with the right plastic, just have to start at the top of the pallet and work your way around the motor.

One word... FREIGHT!!!

Trust me, this is the only way you want to do it. Fex-Ex offers it and I think DHL does as well. That or you can go through a transport company. They will put the parts on a palete (sp) and shrink wrap them so they don't fall off. Then it's moved via a fork lift.

when my swap was shipped to me it was on a pallet had two metal bands securing it to the pallet, ratchet straps like walker mentioned would work also. One strap went over the valve cover and a large piece of rubber was used to keep it from scratching and another strap was around the transmission. And then the whole thing was shrink wraped. They put all the small parts that came with it like the axles and ecu in a box and sat it on the side of the pallet before shrink wrapping the whole thing.

It was delivered to me by a freight carrier , R&L carriers if i remember correctly. It was wery good packaging sturdy and nothing was damaged during shipment.

Get a large plastic tub (with a lid) and several cans of expanding foam from some place like Wal-Mart. Soak the bottom of the tub with the foam then let it expand and harden. Cover your parts in plastic (garbage bags should work) and put them in the tub. Now cover the rest of the tub in foam being sure to really fill up the sides. Let the foam expand and harden (it should overflow out the top of the tub completely sealing the parts in a cocoon of hardened foam). Cut off any foam that's flowing over the top. Install the lid and then punch several holes through both the lid and tub and secure it with zip ties.

That's what I did at least.

Now that's not a bad idea to have for the future.

Question though, where did you get a closeable tub? Trash can maybe?

I stole the idea from someone else, can't remember who, so don't give me all the credit.

Wal-Mart sells big square tupper ware looking tubs with lids.

Yes it is!!!

And if you can't find one, a trash can or something similar would probably work as well and would fit the engine.
