how can i tell if its rod knock or head thats knocking ... someone help plzz!!!
hi guys.. i am going to buy a 1.5lsi but it is knocking quite bad the oqner says i can get a d16z6 head that will fit but dont want to pay a load for it then to find out it is rod knock.. i heard rod knock is really bad so how do i tell or do i find out what it is cheers jamie
rod knocks are very loud, most valve "ticks" arent as loud, under some circumstances if a rod is knocking, the engine barely starts if at all. dont buy unless its a cheap buy...
unless the valves have a minor tick and just need adjusted, then it will give u endless headaches

if it's the vavles it will start to tick faster when you accelerate and if it's rod knock it wont
I'm not sure but i think vavles open and close twice for every one revolution of the crank. I'm not 100% but someone should correct me if i'm wrong.

you contradicted yourself, i think what you ment to say is that both are rev-related so its hard to tell buy just reving it,, i would throw it in nuetral and ping it off the rev limiter once or twice, then yould know if its a valve or rod

i think thats what i ment to say..lol not too sure anymore but he can't exactly ping it off the limiter because it's not his yet he's about to buy it. I only heard rod knock for a couple seconds when my friend started up his car heard it then shut it off and started tearing the motor apart a few hours later and my daily's valves are ticking and they sounds completly different.
it's basically an onomatopoeia, tick vs knock. if it's knocking than it's a rod if it's ticking than it's valves.
