On the b20 are the sleeves weaker than the ones in the ls motor?

 

from what ive heard, yes they are.

 

yes they are thinner.. the outer diameter is the same size.. so the b20 is 1.5 mm thinner.. which is alot

why do you say that? theres PLENTY of boosted b20's around. dont tell him not to boost.

He said not to with stock sleeves.

Well atleast if you're going to run alot of boost, don't run it with the stock sleeves.

i know and i said its fine. you can run plenty of boost. i have seen 15-18.

 

i am going for fully built ls/vtec turbo would it be better for boost with the b20 or the ls considering the sleeves and by the way is the ls/vtec motor a good one to boost in the first place?

Ok ask those people if they sleeved their blocks gurantee its 99%. Theres always the occasional jerk that decides not to and soon enough, cracked sleeves

No they are all stock. Why would you listen to countless experienced builders?

 

wow, I'm amazed the info that is circulating here. I personally know boosted B20 vtec than ran 11's in the quarter. It's all in the tune. and with boost level recommendations, 6psi can blow a motor. Hp levels will get you in the ball park of an engine's strength. just my two cents.

none of that disproved the theory that b20's have weak sleeves...

to the OP's original question: yes, b20 sleeves are weaker than b18a/b sleeves.
(unless the motor is in bad shape in general for whatever reason)

that doesnt mean the b20 is a bad motor, it just doesnt respond well to high levels of boost with the stock sleeves.

 

Honda-tech is so funny with all the misinformation around here. Everyone thinks engines work on magic or something. First of all the sleeves being thin has nothing to do with the reason they are weaker than an LS or any other motor for that matter. Did you know a stock k20 comes with thinner sleeves and a b20? So I guess that means k20's have weaker sleeves right? The reason people have problems with the b20 sleeves is the way they are cast in the block. The sleeves are a mono sleeve design that can twist and crack. You can build a b20 beast on stock sleeves, but who knows how long it will really last. Tunning is your best friend with a b20, a bad or no tune at all is retarded. If you really want to make reliable power dont be cheap and sleeve the motor.
