okay, so i was watching car and driver tv and they were talking about the new turbo mini cooper s. at 1.6 liters and t-charged, it makes 172hp and 177 lbs of torque. how come a stock gsr makes alot less torque (128 lbs) with more displacement? and if the extra torque is from the turbo, my gsr made 178lbs at 7 psi. i dont get it. less displacement and more torque? someone please try to explain this ot me. thanks

i understand that its turbo charged but my gsr at 7psi made 178 lbs (at the wheels) but if you put a bigger turbo on there, it would make more then my 178 if it makes 177 with such a small turbo.

 

Horsepower is derived from torque. HP=(torque*RPM)/5252.

The cooper probably doesn't rev high and is made for midrange power. GSR's rev to 8000 giving the high HP and not torque.

Well for one, the 1.6 that they use is 77mm bore/85.8mm stroke. Basicly just a smaller bore, almost same stroke as the GSR. The turbo they use is probably pushing more than 12psi, and fizzles after 5k (probably because of the cam used). That's a good recipe for a high-torque, low-hp motor.

Lastly, those are flywheel numbers (BHP). Assuming a 15% drivetrain loss, that makes ~150wtq. If you were to take your 178wtq number and adjust it for 12% less displacement, that makes it ~156wtq. So that means its making torqe like your motor, just not the horsepower.

Ummm, no. Larger turbos (given same PSI) produce more torque. It just so happens that smaller turbo (ie: on stock cars) produce the power so early and loose it all in the higher RP....you plug in that equation and you get yourself a stock SRT4 lots of low end which the formula says will only do torque and not high end because the torque drops off. If that same car could keep the torque up hgih...guess what LOTS of HP

We see what you are saying, but then don't go about saying that smaller turbos make more torque....because that is not true.
