emergency brake light question
My emergency brake is not on, but the dashboard light for it is lit. Does anyone have any experience with this, or know what this could be? I'm guessing some kind of electrical glitch that's not too serious, but I'd like to figure it out. My Accord is a '90, so it's getting up there in years.
Check the little switch under the handbrake lever. Sometimes the bracket bends or the switch breaks, so the handbrake lever is no longer pressing down the button of that switch.
That warning lamp also triggers for low brake fluid. Check the brake fluid in the reservoir.
There's a float switch in the brake fluid reservoir cap. It's been known to be flaky, & sometimes it hangs up if the screen inside the reservoir gets warped.
If the brake fluid is actually low, you can add some. But be aware that this may be caused by your brakes being about worn out. When you install new brake pads, you have to push the caliper pistons back in to allow room. This pushes fluid back into the reservoir, where it can overflow & make a mess. This is a real good excuse to bleed your entire brake system so all the fluid is fresh.
