Default CV boot

Well upon changing one of my tires I discovered my outer cv boot on the front passenger side had came undone spraying grease everywhere mainly the inside of my wheel.

My question is since most of the grease is gone is the cv joint done? Or can I just replace the cv boot repack it with grease and all will be fine?

Obviously one will be cheaper than the other, hopefully someone has had this problem before.

Thanks,

Well, it depends on how long that crack has been there and how much grease has leaked out, if you want to either buy a new boot and grease kit OR just replace the thing.

If it's not making any noise at all under a full turn, then it's probably a new crack and hasn't leaked that much out yet. In that case you could totally pull that sucker out and rebuild it and get off cheap that way, but if you are hearing clicking noises, then it may be too late by now and you won't want to risk it having internal damage - so getting a new one would be better.

only under full turns when the wheel is full to the left or right but quarter or half way there is nothing at all

If the boot is not damaged, you may be able to pump it with some grease, and put it back on. If the boot is damaged, and you have to take it apart to replace it, you may as well get a new cv joint too, and replace the whole kit-and-kaboodle while you have it apart.

agreed. once the bearings are exposed to debris long term, the chance of having to replace the unit would be high. its always better to be safe than sorry though. check the condition of your bearings and go from there.

i have the same problem, and i just went to napa and grabbed some grease and put it back in there. yeah it will still throw it out but it will help until i have time to replace it and i don't have to worry about it breaking or whatever they do.
