Default Advanced timing + Smog checking

Don't know if anyone has posted this before, but I was just wondering if advancing your timing will affect smog by a whole lot... I know that it only takes a couple of minutes to adjust the timing from advance to stock or vice versa, but I just wanna know how much it affects smog or at all -- I live in Cali... where everything is restricted and strict....

I beleive timing is 16 +/- 2. So if you set your timing at 18, you'll be within specifications. Smog ***** can't say chit. Sure, it'll make your car run a bit dirtier, but it's a 2000, so it shouldn't matter...

Yeah... thanks a lot... I had my timing advanced before on my GS-R... and nothing major never really happened when I smogged it... but just to be on the safe side.. I was just wondering... because I don't really like changing stuff once I've already set it to where I like...

I'm failing smog 5x over.. my HCs are around 500 or so.. when i decreased timing from 18 to 14, the HC reading dropped to around 425-430

Man, you failed smog 5 times... are you just smog testing or doing the testing where you go only to a TEST ONLY center...

Thanks a lot... that post helped out a little bit... but that's weird though.. some of the things that were being said.. like about the 4-1 header... I had the DC 4-1 header in my GS-R when I went to smog check at a Test Only shop and it was no problem... the car also had the AEM CAI and timing advanced...my car ran good except for one thing.... they had to replace my fuel cap and that was like $10.. but other than that.. my car passed no problem...

How much did you advance your timing and where was it idling?

Are you asking about my GS-R..??? If you are, well I just advanced it 3 degrees... and it would idle like stock... right below 1K rpm...

I meant my HC reading is 5 times over the limit.. i tested it when i used to have an automotive tech class. I remember hearing a backfire coming out of my car several years ago.. must've blown out the cat. retarding the timing by 4 degrees dropped my HC reading down by 75
