brand new axle seals leaking why?
well i have brand new axles and new axle seals and they are leaking. i filled the tranny with honda mtf. what could cause this to happen? did i do something wrong? i used a seal installation kit to put them in. any ideas?
My driver side seal has the same problem. I changed both seals when I installed my LSD. Perhaps a piece of dirt was on the shaft when it was installed. The leak is very slow, so I just check the transmission fluid once a month. The level has been fine for the past two years.
well today is the first day i have ever driven the car and already you can see just where i parked it a little spot of oil. i looked under the car and it seemed to be leaking pretty good. also how do i know if i have the correct axles. i got it from a friend. there are no stickers/castings of any sort that would identify the trans so all i did was order some for a 94 gsr.
ya there usually wont be a way to tell by looking at the axle, you might want to just check the seal first as stated above, if your problem is still not fixed then call the place you got the axles from and give them the # from the box or whatever your axles came in to verify they gave you the right ones..
well i know the axles are the ones that i ordered and they are correct. they are for a gsr and i think the tranny is for a b16 but that is just what i was told.

Let me know if that cures the problem, I was just about to post a thread about the exact same thing! New axles on Saturday, and a small puddle under my transmission every day since.
OK I have now jacked up my car and I can now see its actually leaking from the oil pan. I guess having a new clutch and axles installed somehow knocked the oil pan just enough to start a leak.

Whats that supposed to mean? There wasnt a leak Saturday morning, but after I got my axles and clutch installed there is a leak. Its not the transmission because I have Honda MTF in there and its red, and the puddle is oil brown. And I can see where it is coming out of the oil pan gasket. So sit on something thick and pointy.

Have you been underneath your car recently before the axles were changed? I'm guessing it's been leaking from the oil pan for awhile.
I have a very slight leak from my oil pan. Not enough to drip onto the ground but just enough to get the bottom of the pan very grimy. After I drive 3K miles before I change my oil, I'm usually only 1/2-quart low.

You're sure it's oil and not transmission fluid you're leaking? Did you smell it to make sure (assuming your running transmission fluid and not motor oil in your tranny)?
Dude read the thread again. I have Honda MTF which is RED in the tranny, and the oil leak is BROWN oil. I can see exactly where it comes out of the oil pan. I have cardboard under my car to check. It wasnt there before and now after swapping clutch and axles it is there. He must have bumped the oil pan while putting back the tranny and while holding the engine up to drop the tranny. Anyway not a big deal.

ATF is red, not MTF. If your Honda manual tranny is running ATF then you have other problems (although some cars do use ATF in manual trannys like some Toyotas for instance).
I also don't see bumping the oil pan causing a leak, seeing as how it's held on by like 20 bolts and nuts. It would have to be a very hard whack on the oil pan and would have had to probably make a dent in the pan and warp the sealing surface to cause a leak.
