Axle seals gone? Axles popped out yesterday.
Alright, well its been quite a couple of days. Yesterday both the axles popped out of my trans. I hauled all my tools over there (about a mile away) and through the grace of God I was able to fix it. At least I was able to drive it home w/o any fluid leaks. I got them both back in there as well as I could...but the driver axle wouldn't go in very easy (neither would really, but the driver side was much harder..maybe cause they weren't covered in motor oil???)... I put my finger into the differential and pulled out a little ring..it was smashed up and blocking the way to get the axle in... It's like a coil sorta..Hard to describe. Heres what it looks like. Is this part of the axle seal? And if so, to replace it should I just pull the old seals out w/ a screwdriver? And use a rubber mallet to pound the new ones in? Put some grease around the outside?? How dangerous is it to use old seals. Im sorry but the fuel pump broke yesterday too, thank god I had an extra one laying around. I ******* hate this car and Im tired of this **** breaking..If not...what should I do?

Thats not the little clip thats at the end of the axle is it, this was inside the tranny right?

those are small thin bands (looks like tiny length of spring) that goes on the insides of the axles seals to hold the seal tightly against the axle itself so fluid and whatnot doesnt seep out. Order some new tranny axle seals. You'll see the springs are part of the seal too. Old ones can be pulled out easily and new ones are pretty cheap. Take out the old ones with a small screwdriver but try not to scar the surface. Make sure the new ones are pushed in evenly when installing the new seals. a rubber mallet should be ok if done lightly. i'd never re use old seals. It'll end up leaking in the long run if it doesnt leak already. Make sure to refill your tranny fluid after the new seals are in and axles are pushed in all the way and your good to go

I would buy your axle seals from Honda though, the ones I have bought from Auto Parts stores always leak. My honda ones have yet to.

should I pry it out from the outside... or should I stick the screwdriver all the way in the hole and 'cross pry' it out?

i used a razor blade and a tiny screwdriver and took it out carefully so i wouldnt scar the surface. mine didnt come out in one piece. took a little work to get it all out
