Grinding 3rd when speed shifting...Tranny going bye bye???
I am noticing more and more that my B16a S1 tranny is grinding more and more when speed/power shifting in to 3rd. It doesn't do it in any other gear, and only does it when I shift from 2nd in VTEC, or higher RPM shifts. A couple of people tell me it's only a matter of time now b4 my tranny goes...but is there anything I can do to get it to stop, or extend the timeframe of the failure?

Its not the whole tranny that needs fixed. It's just the 3rd gear and synchronizer. The problem is that the S1 trans matches nothing domestic, so unless you have a Japanese parts supplier that can get you parts, then you need another trans.
ive heard about 3rd gear grinding in almost every manual honda in existance. more proof that honda transmissions are crap. i wonder why can't they put their incredible engine technology into those slushboxes.
i've been driving with 3rd and 5th gear grind since day one.
i get 5th gear grind only when i shift at high rpm from 2nd to 5th gear.
i have a nissan. i think nissan FWD tranny sucks. a little wheel hop and you wish you bought tranny insurance.
good luck on fixing the grinding problem. it's not too bad. just don't shift at high rpm

i had the same in my integra si, it grinded when changing from 3rd to 4th at above 5500rpm, i left the car in for a service and asked the guy to change the transmission fluid, when i picked the car up again i assumed he had done as i asked. anyway about a day or two later i was shifting up to 4th and it grinded again, so the next day i was passing the garage i dropped in to pay my bill and the guy said he forgot to change the tranny fluid, as i had no time to get it done then i said i'd get it done some other day, about 4/5 weeks later i still hadnt got it changed but the grinding stopped, i drove up and down this road near my house to the redline in 3rd and pwoershifted to 4th loads of times and nothing..it went in smooth every time, so i decided that if it aint broken dont fix it, so i'm still running on possibly the original tranny fluid after 72+k!!

are you pressing the clucth in completely and are you releasing it too soon?..
i had the exact same problem..
i thought my tranny was bunk, but after fully stepping on the clutch i never grinded..
get the technique right and you wont grind.. i grinded for 3 years until learned how to shift all over again..
hope this helps..

it's the synchros and possibly the shift fork(s) for whatever gear it's grinding. unless you've invested a whole lot of money in your transmission and want it fixed, you really shouldn't worry about it. just drive it till it breaks (it should last 150k easy) and then get a new one from a junkyard or something. honda trannies are basically junk and they aren't worth fixing IMHO.
