Default MAJOR AT problems, 92 EX 4dr, need help ASAP

I have been driving the car for over a year now and just started having this problem on thursday.

Thursday I Drove the car and noticed that it was acting like a MT with a slipping clutch. Drove it again to confirm my suspicions, confirmed. Friday I set off for my father's garage to see if we could do something about it. I made it about 7 miles when it began acting as if it was in neutral. All of the sudden the tach shot up to 7k and I let off the gass while the car coasted to a stop. I sat in a small parking lot with it running while I tried shifting gears and appeared to have none. Got out, checked the ATF, full, smells fine. Got back in, turned off the car. I decided to start it back up and try it again, as soon as I started it back up it was fine. Put it in drive and go. After about 15-20 minutes of driving it did it again, so I put it in neutral and switched it off while coasting. Waited 3 or 4 seconds, started it back up, good to go. This leads me to believe that it's electrical, either a solenoid on the tranny or the Tranny Control Unit. Couldn't find any of the parts at my father's place so I came home saturday. However, on saturday it was alot worse. I had to swith it off almost once every minute or two and pull over a few times to let it/me calm down. Now I'm lucky if it'll even go in gear let alone move.

Anyone ever have this problem or know anything about it?

Any info would be great,
Thanks,
Nick

I was just looking here

http://www.hondaautomotivepart...USING

And #5 (shift solenoid) and #7 (lock up solenoid) could be possibilities.

Maybe?

I have read the 94 shifting problems post and fail to see the similarity. The two cars are not showing any of the same signs and there is alot of talk about fluid pressure. This relates to me how?

check your fluid level/colour. There are 2 main problem that cause that in auto trannys. Both of them go hand in hand. The Valve body is what actuially switches the gears, if you are low on fluid, the valve body doesnt build up enough pressure, but when you keep revving the engine, it finially gets the pressure it needs and it shifts. So, the first step is to check the fluid and top it up as needed, then come back and let us know

No matter how much you rev the engine it does NOT go back into gear until you turn the car off and turn it back on. Fluid is perfect.

I still think it's a solenoid or the TCM. I just need confirmation.

I had the exact problem in a 90 ex and it was the transmission. After disassembling it, the shop said the internal filter was clogged up. After sitting the junk settled and the car had enough pressure to drive fine, after 10 minutes enough gunk had been kicked up to clog up the filter. I tried solenoids and tcm and nothing worked. $250 later at a junkyard and $400 in labor I was back on the road. That is until the car was stolen. Hope that helped

I don't even have to let mine sit though. I can be driving, shift it into neutral and coast for like 3 seconds, start it back up and it's fine for a few minutes. That's why I'm thinking solenoid, on and then off is/was an instant fix, now it's worse and I can't drive it.

those solenoids are hit or miss. basically they are on or they are off. when they dont work, your car doesnt shift into any gear at all, period. when they go out, the stress usually takes the whole tranny with them. just an fyi

I finally decided to take everyone's advice and change the tranny fluid. I ran some sea foam tranny cleaner through it and drained it. I only got 3 1/2 qts. out of it??? When I filled it it only took 3 1/2 qts. TC must not have drained at all. There was no change in the shifting. It will go in gear when cold but only stays in gear for 15 or so seconds, and turning it off then back on doesn't work anymore either. I think it's tranny time
