d15z1 VTEC-E motor into a 92 Si question...
Right now I'm just looking to make a car that runs and passes smog and gets good mileage. I'm thinking about putting a D15Z1 VTEC-E motor into my 92 Si. The motor I currently have is smoked b.t.w. Will everything wire up correctly and can I run the Si ecu (p28 I think?) with this motor without any problems?

No and no. PM user "Bense"

The d15z1 uses a 5-wire wide band o2 sensor and a P28 is a normal 4 wire. You'll need to get the P28 chipped for the d15z1 specs or you can buy a VX ECU for like $30. I still have the ECU, EGR valve(it has a weird one on the firewall that you'll need), VX cluster and the 5 wire o2 sensor that came off my car. If you search there has been a few people who have successfully swapped these motors into their cars.
Can I block off the EGR and use my current exhuast manifold and O2 sensor? Worst case, can't I just bolt up the intake mani from my current motor (D15B VTEC, JDM equivelant of Z6)? I'm trying to keep cost low and pass smog. Mainly just need my car to run right now. I can get this motor from a JDM importer for 250.
i have a feeling since your in cali. if that motor is supposed to have an egr valve, its gonna have to have it on it and in proper working order to pass. maybe not but......
You'll need the complete longblock, ECU, and the correct O2 sensor to pass smog and run correctly w/out throwing codes. The O2 sensor itself is going to cost more than the motor.
It's probably the same cost overall if you import a replacement Si motor and half the trouble. The ZC/Z6/D15B motors get great mileage. If you live in a hilly town, or if you're heavy on the throttle, you'll actually get better mileage with a Z6 than a Z1.

Anybody else have anymore info on this? I think worst case, I can just use the longblock and use intake and exhaust from d15 VTEC (130 hp JDM version)...

From my experience, a single cam is a single cam. Use the D15B Intake and Exhaust manifolds and your stock Si harness with the stock P28 ECu and I can't imagine any problems you would have. I'm not exactly sure how cali emission tests work, but we had them implemented recently in Austin, TX too. Supposed to be the same thing to my knowledge.
Being a state inspector here I can tell you that according to TX emission laws on a OBD1 vehicle the CEL does not matter its the percentage of harmfull exhaust gasses you put out of your exhaust that can pass or fail you. A CEL will only fail you on a OBD2 emmsions test. But check your cel to see what it is anyhow here's the thread https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/1171263.
But to answer your question, I did in the first paragraph.

I'll see if I can find all the stuff you need and if you really want it I'll sell it to you really cheap. Everything worked fine when it was in my car and it's stored in my attic. My motor had 185,000+ miles on it. I ran it hard everyday. It never used oil, and when I took the valve cover off it was the cleanest motor I've ever seen.
Whatever you do though don't use the VX tranny though. It has the longest gears out of any Honda I've ever drove. It's like a 3 speed because you can run 3rd gear over 110+ probably to the fuel cut off. I never took mine over 110 cause it took to long to reach it and I was running into traffic. I think I went 75 in 2nd gear.
If you aren't going to use the motor the way it should it's not really worth it. I'd get another Z6 instead. The Vtec-E won't function right without the P07 and the 5-wire and it'll probably get the same if not worse gas mileage as another Z6.

I'm running a DX trans. Funny I know but when I bought the car the tranny was bad and I had a DX trans lying around so i put that in. Does Vtec-e work any different than regular vtec or is it just called vtec-e because its just a really effecient motor. I'm also wondering if I can use Z6 intake and exhaust components and maybe even go as far as using a z6 cam. I can also port match to the intake and exhaust manifolds fairly quickly too. This would save me some money. Sounds like a lot of wasted time for this silly little motor but the port match and cam install would only take me a few extra hours. I just wonder if this is even possible. Not like I want to build a fast motor out of this vtec-e but it would be fun and couldn't hurt to have some extra power.
http://asia.vtec.net/article/d15b/. This link kinda tells you a little about Vtec-E. Look for the 3 stage vtec... it explains the lean burn mode a little.
You can't use any other cam with the Z1 head from what I've gathered. It has roller rockers and such. You can use your exhaust and intake manifold along with the P28. It'll run but it won't run as good as just the straight d15z1. I put an SI tranny in mine and it beat up on all the other single cammed hatches that I raced around me. If you can afford to get this motor and install some pistons and ARP rod bolts along with your complete Z6 head, intake manifold, P28, etc... it should run pretty good.
You're probably better off putting another Z6 or a Y8 in your car istead. Or do a mini-me. If you're truely interested in putting a Z1 in your car you'll have to get the ECU, EGR, wideband, etc... If you have anything to trade or something pm me and we can work something out so that you can swap your car.

92_VX_EG: This article is refering to the Civic HX motor that started coming in EKs. The D15Z1 VTEC-E I'm installing is basically a 92-95 Civic CX motor with VTEC. There is no special 3 stage VTEC. I think I'm just going to buy this motor. I'm getting a killer deal on it from a JDM importer in Gardena, CA. I think it's called Makoto Autosports. Found it on ebay. I won the auction at $250. After tax and their "handling fee" of $20 I'm paying $295 out the door. I live an hour and a half away, so I'll pick it up myself and save on the huge shipping fees. The cheapest D15 VTEC motor I've found otherwise is almost 450. I'm not into building single cam motors so this is just to get the car running. I don't want to waste any money on single cam motors but right now I can't afford to put anything good in soooooooo here's my dilemma. Also my car needs to pass a smog test and this motor will with flying colors.
You asked if the Vtec-E was any different than a normal vtec. It is a little different. I said that it will tell you a little bit about vtec-e. I know you aren't getting the dual d15B. But it touched a little about the lean burn mode.
I think the more expensive d15b vtec's that you are seeing is the 130hp version. Vtec-E motors are pretty cheap but they usually take a little more work to swap into a car that didn't have one. I'm not just trying to get you to buy my leftover ****. You want the car to run great and pass emissions. I'm not sure if it will using the Z6 parts. I know for a fact that it would if you had all the right parts for the motor.
If you sell your P28 you can buy all of the stuff that you need and still have money left. In fact I'd trade you all my stuff for your P28.
