Your right #3 you can use any 92-95 D16Z6 motor if your just looking for a quick replacement, its always good to have paper work on the sale but you can never be to sure unless u see and hear it run. What's wrong with the old motor?

keep in mind when you buy a used motor you never realy know what your getting so if its as simple as a leaky oilpan gasket then replace it

For an easy and quick fix, D15b7's (came in 92-95 DX) go for like $50...

If you're in CA, and you want a technically smog legal (as opposed to crossing your fingers and hoping they don't notice at the smog shop) engine, your best bet is to get a same year or newer direct replacement engine or an OBD1 ZC equivalent. If you get a non-VTEC motor, then to be smog legal, you'd need the correct ECU and smog equipment for that motor if it is different (some models came with EGR). If you're not in CA, just get an OBD1 motor that's not from a CX or VX and keep the ECU you have already.

I've never had any problems with a single cam motor in a Civic in CA. They simply don't notice the engine has been swapped, or they don't care. Mine is an OBD1 ZC VTEC motor (age unknown) in a Civic DX, no paperwork, ebay P28 ECU from Singapore, CARB legal header, and I've smogged it at three different places w/out a second glance. No need to ref it.
