how to adjust timing with out a timing light
can anyone tell me how to check it with out a timing light. I have one back home but im very far away from it and i didnt bring my haynes manual with me.
look at the check points on the crank and on the cam... also you can alter your timing a bit with your dizzy lossen the bolts and it should move a bit. not sure if it helps but without a timing light thats how i did my timing prolly alot more work than it should be
ok dont listen to d-money. cam timing and ignition timing are 2 different things. im sure u are asking about ignition timing and u really cant check that without a timing light. Ur jus gonna have to find one to use

There is a way if you have a spare dizzy cap which you can throw away.
Take the spare dizzy and cut a hole in the center just big enough so that you don't cut out any of the contact points which are connected to the spark plug wires. This way you can see where the rotor is wrt the contact points. You can look for the timing marks on the crankshaft and line up the red one with the timing mark. Now look into the distributor and make sure that the rotor is as close as possible to the contact point for the #1 cylinder by adjusting the whole dizzy assembly.
This is all done with the engine off.
Put on the good dizzy cap and timing should be set.

If you want to adjust with the engine running, make sure you short the connector under the glove box. Otherwise the computer will try to compensate and you will have issues with pinging, etc.
Just because it idles fine doesn't mean it's adjusted right. After each adjustment, check the acceleration. If there is good acceleration and no pinging or lagging you should be good.

I'm hoping there someone that can help me with my problum i bought a 1992 honda civic and it had a blown head gasket and the heads where no good so i bought a gasket kit and another cylender head change the cam and rocker arms made sure that the torqe was set right when i put everything back left the number one spark plug out put the cranck on tdc and the rotor under the cap was pointing at the number one i put the cap and the spark plug in and went to start the car it wouldn't it sound like it had no compresion so i put it back tdc and took spark plug out and the number one piston was down not up where it should be when in tdc so i turned the crank until the number one was up and looked to see where the timing marks where at on the pully and there at the bottom and the cam timing marks are in the right place with each mark on each side and the word up on top but the rotor under the cap is pointing at the number four where the number one should be so i changed the wiring order and so where the number one should be is number four and the four is now the number one and the car started right up but it back fires and doesn't want to stay on i don't know why or how it's possable that the car will only work like this
