I have a 1st gen type-r tranny and have a 3rd gear grind, i'm going to the drag strip on friday, i bought some synchromesh from the chevy dealerpart #12345349.
I've heard not to use the synchromesh with the friction modifier, i'm @ work and don't hve time to search, but i will when i get home. Can some one please help me.

I use 1 can FM, and the rest regular. Took away my 3rd gear grind like a champ
Not only that but I recently had my tranny apart the my 3rd/4th gears/synchro/hubs were SHOT, and it still shifts like butter!

It's more of a band aid then a fix. It will temporally help, but the problem will still be there and gradually get worse. It does however work for suppressing the symptoms though.
I have used it numerous times for about 40,000 miles, and have not had a problem since I started using it. It fixed my slight grind in 3rd gear like a charm!
yes it might help you temp. but for the $400 synco and gear u just need, you risk damaging a much more expensive piece (diff) becauce of not using the correct fluid specified for your car. dont be cheap w/ a type r, get a ls or gsr.. just my opinion..

been using gm syncromesh with friction modifier in my car and some of my friends high hp cars for a few years now with very good results.
its the same viscosity as the factory recomended transmission fluid so its not your putting a thicker gear oil in the tranny.

My car had that crap in it when i bought it and whined when making low speed turns (a diff noise) changed diff fluid twice real fast to flush it out, and noise goes away. Not good, Fix the trans when it starts to go out and it will be a lot cheaper than when you ar gonna have to pay someone like me to fix all the stuff later. Good luck w/ ur GM american made crap in your japanese car..

There isn't a separate fluid for the diff in the tranny...

Most likely not. Always the chance of creating a noise issue though. I've run across it a time or two.

There's a lot of debate regarding what trans fluid to use obviously. Honda has released an improved version of their MTF in the past year, may be worth considering.

when I was having some slight 3rd gear shifting problems back in the day, I tried a few fluids (Redline, Honda MTF, Synchromesh) and the only one that made a difference was the Synchromesh. I even felt like the MTF made my problem worse and have used Synchromesh since (with at least 1 bottle of the FM). just my .02.

Honda released the new MTF to correct people's shifting complaints, might be worth a try vs. the older style.
The newer fluid comes in a bottle with a silver cap.
A lot of alternative fluids do seem to allow easier shifting, but cause increased syncro wear over the long haul, especially if driven hard. The synchros need a certain amount of friction to work properly. If they're already shot and grinding then I suppose it's worth a try.

The newer Honda fluid is awesome... I always had a grinding problem due to the transmission being raped consistent over the last 8 years... LOL A nice bottle of Honda MTF made it went away for a good year already
I lied, it has a white cap.
Here's a little more info on it. Supposedly performs like GM Synchromesh but sells for a good bit less, and is "honda approved" for whatever that's worth. Uncertain whether it contains a friction modifier or not.

V6/6M Accord guys seem to like it fairly well. At $6/qt it might be worth trying.

i think i'll try the new honda/acura mtf, i put the synchromesh in and it worked, for alittle bit. i made 5 passes, on the 4th i missed, 5th was ok. I'm going to pull the tranny out soon and see what my damage is. even though i don't want to admit it to myself, i'm pretty sure i'll be needing to buy 3rd gear....expletive
it might not be the gear itsself thats bad. You probably just have grinded down the syncro sleeve teetch to a triangle. Try and remove every other tooth on your syncro sleeve and youll never miss a gear again.
