water pump gone??
any ideas if this sounds like a bust water pump?
basicly its cold out (its -1 today) after a 19 mile drive my top hose on my engine is red hot and looks like its going to pop (looks like its been pressurised) but the bottom hose if fine and only gets luck walm after 19 or so miles. the rad is brand new and i thought it could be the thremostat so i changed it out 500 miles ago. there are NO air pockets etc (it has been bled around ten times already)
ideas?

If you have a new radiator and t-stat and the system is bled fully, it's one of two things: a) blockage in system or b) faulty water pump. I'd guess water pump.

water pump.
One way to tell is there is a small hole on the water pump housing on the back side of the motor (fire wall side on the timing belt end). If coolant is coming out of this hole the water pump is bad. If it's not it still maybe bad. But it's one way to check.

same here.
i had a waterpump go out on me, but only overheat during stop and go driving or long freeway trips.
it leaked like crazy. if i kept coolant in the radiator, i could limp the car to work.
luckily i worked for honda at the time, so i did the whole t-belt, waterpump deal and the problem went away.

niknak, could be worn off finns (car is on 170 thou miles, no recipt in past history for a pump) looking on the search engine it says a ballooned hose or swollen up top hose could even be headgasket failuer.
gonna get a pump on order and get it compression tested on saturday.
no gunge in the coolant or in the oil cap, though the car does seem to blow a fair bit of whiteish smoke on start up and when its freezing outside (even after a long drive). maybe coolant leaking into a cylinder ??
meh. this car sucks...not run right in ages

If you're getting white smoke while driving then youre headgasket is probably leaking, but make sure it isn't just steam because exhaust does make h20 or water, so hopefully it isn't coolant.
Look at the back of the water pump at the hole and if it is leaking youre pump is toasted and if you've got 170K, then I'm guessin it's gone.

same thing here... my pump decided to go on me when i was in trafic on easter last year.... threw the hazzards & went on the shoulder to get some air through it....
i had a long trip home & thankfully i was at my dad's (is a machanic & knows the tricks) what you do is u fill the radiator up w/ watar as much as possible & then put the cap on 1/2 way... only one click... & then i drove the whole way home w/o a problem... but i did have a gallon of water in my car at all times just in case... some after i got that fixed i saw some poor guy over heating on the side of the road & handed him the water

strange thing is the car is not overheating, the temp gauge still sits in the the same place as normal (about a third up) but it is really cold outside ??
