you CAN put a 225 on there IF the car isn't too low, but it will throw your speedometer WAY off. Stick to oem diameter, ie: 195, etc...

Yup. The best size depends on the kind of car. For example, on a 15" rim, the best size for a del sol, CRX, or pre-'96 Civic is 195/50-15. But the best size for an Integra or '97-00 Civic is 195/55-15 (and 205/50-15 will also work).

do you think because they are wide they will grip better? remember better compound better grip!

the wider the more surface area plus why would you want a crappy tire that doesnt grip?

Get 195/50-15.

If you are looking for the best performance, get sticky tires. For example, the Goodyear F1 GS-D3 comes in that size.

Don't wider tires and stickier compounds increase grip? So is it possible to have a wide/400 wear tire and be comparable to a narrower, sticker tire (200 wear)

Welcome,

Stickier compounds do indeed increase grip. So do differences in tread pattern. Differences in tires - due to their compounds, tread pattern, and other design features - make huge differences in grip. Of course, it's more complicated than that. Some tires are designed to grip well only on dry pavement, others on dry pavement as well as wet pavement but only in moderate to warm temperatures, still others on snow and cold temperatures as well as warm temperatures, and still others only in snow and cold. And there are other factors in addition to grip, like tread life, and price. But yes, tread compounds and tread patterns make a big difference. Some tire models perform better than others.

By comparison, differences in performance due to differences in treadwidth are relatively small. A stickier tire, even a narrower one, will almost always provide better grip than a wider tire that is not as sticky.

Also, the treadwear rating (the 200 and 400 you mentioned) is intended to measure only the rate of treadwear (and doesn't always do that reliably, either). Lower treadwear ratings don't always mean better grip. Sometimes they do, but not always.

Feel free to ask more questions if there's anything you're not sure about, and we'll try to help by answering them.

I thought that the first number was the width in mm and then the middle number is the sidewall height (proportion to the height, last number is rim size. Tire width has nothing to do with rpm so how would it affect the speedo ?

Tire width in relation to the aspect ratio does affect your speedo.

the aspect/profile is a % of the tire width

for example: 195/55r15 the side wall is 55% of the width of the tread. 205/50r15 is 50% so a wider tire but less aspect ratio would almost give it the same size sidewall height. using a tire size calculator from http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html will illustrate this theory a lot better.

play around with it

Completely incorrect. The contact patch size is entirely determined by the weight on the tire, and the pressure in it. Nothing more.

A wider tire has a different shaped contact patch than a narrower tire, but with equal pressure, the contact patch is the exact same size.
