rocks in my cam gears???
so here i am almost done with my ls/vtec build ($6300 bucks later) and i have modified both covers for easy access to the cam gears. well now im worried about f'ing rocks messin' sh*t up. so anyone out there ever have this problem? for those that want to know why my build was so much (p&p, balancing, complete rebuild and every damn thing possible i/h/e + tuning, you name it i got it) here are some pics of what im talkin about with rocks gettin' in.

there are plenty of people out there running without covers on the cam gears. I haven't heard of it being detrimental yet.
If you are that worried about it, cover them up.
About your build...
what are you tuning with? Do you have HP/TQ numbers? What is your goal?

I really havent heard of the problem either...
Unless youre driving through a gravel driveway or on a gravel street I think you'd be fine.
And Suzuka, I dont think he has it installed yet, I could be wrong.. If I am, numbers would be really nice
that seems like one hell of a build.

if you havent dyno tune it yet...leave it til you tune it....afterwards, purchase another belt cover and valve cover and put it on....dont take the risk of a rock getting inside...
I once blew a timing belt like that. So i just put mesh on it then decided to get a litle sliding door that i made for tunning it but also protects it. Be safe 6k is a lot of money.

well... I have two valve covers, one to drive to get tuned, the other for acutal driving. I had a golden eagle cam gear break on me while driving for one reason or another. I would suggest on enclosing the entire timing belt area. It only takes once to ruin your build.
you could make a cover for the sides, that would make for easy removal.
example a small sheet of SS. Maybe make it clip on to the sides or haves slots mounted to valve cover/block and then slide the plate in.
if you do this be sure to post pics in the fabrication forum. I would be interested in seeing the outcome.

good point
just take it off before you let anyone look at your bay

If you still have the factory splash guards you should be fine. If you have done away with the splash guards and or the inner fenders I would probably do something to keep **** out.
i will probably just pick up another cover for it. this isnt really my daily driver so i wont have to much to worry about. with the build, i havent put it in yet. still waiting on an lsd/gsr tranny from a friend. then i plan on tuning with hondata. anyone have complaints with phearable? sounds like i could get a custom ecu built for exactly what i have. the price was really good too. (175-275 with obd1 jumper harness) i hope my numbers will be around the 200whp and 150wtq range. thanks again everyone with all the comments.

If you are really concerned you could fabricate something like this:

And I also swear I've seen pre-fab carbon covers specifically for people that cut out their valve cover. But I can't find them now.

thats what I was talking about making, if you do it(which I think is the best option) please post pics in the fab. forum
