Default gas cap issue

Well my check engine light has been on for a while and the code is that classic one for the gas cap. Retightening and resetting the computer has not worked. Today when I filled up I noticed that I am missing the little metal flap that is closed when you are not refueling. Unless 1999 Honda Accord, 4 cyl., didn't come with one, perhaps mine has broken off? I would think that this would be causing the light to come on, as its not a tight seal. Any thoughts? Could I plug this up with some kind of rubber stopper?

I am the second owner of the car, I acquired it about 2 months ago. Yes it is a P1456 code.

I have a '99 Accord, and I don't have the flap you're referring to. It doesn't produce any kind of seal anyway. To be honest, I don't know if the car is supposed to have one.

the flap is like a dust/foreign object trap almost. It is only supposed to stop large stuff from gettin in your gas tank.

Are you sure the noise isn't from releasing the pressure when you unscrew your gas cap?

Haha yea that should be the pressure being released from you gas cap. Thats why it says to unscrew slowly.

What shape is your gas cap in? If it looks like it's been dropped, consider buying a new gas cap from the dealer.

There's the gas cap holder on the fuel door but it's possible that the previous owner put in on the car and it dropped off, or whatever.

When you put gas in then put the cap back on, you are letting it click a minimum of three times, right? If you just put it on until the first click you aren't getting the seal that you need. Remember - three clicks (per the owner's manual).
