CV Axle gone bad. What can happen?
I was wondering. If the mechanic says that your CV axle has gone bad, what does it do to your car? It's pretty expensive to replace.
I'm noticing that the steering wheel needs to be turned slightly to the left in order for the car to go straight. Is this an alignment problem or CV axle problem?

I had mine go bad 4 weeks ago and we replaced both of my axles with Acura Stage-1 axles about 2 weeks ago.. Driving your car will not hurt it at all.. its just kinda noisy. It is not an alignment problem.. At least mine wasnt.. I'm sure its not your axle.. its the CV JOINT.. as was mine.. You cannot break an axle unless you take a sledge hammer to it about 1 million times.. Your axle prolly slid out of the cv joint a little bit causing grease to leak out.. But driving your car wont hurt it anymore than it already is, just dont push your car too hard when its sick.. i did redline 1st 2nd and 3rd when mine was fucked.. and i got a nice ticket for 26 over because of it.. Your car is fine to drive.. just get a new axle.. But the old axle will be a bitch to get out.. Both mine were rusted in and required a lot of hammering to get out
.. Good luck man!

I work at an Acura dealership and can tell you first hand that if you buy an Autozone axle you could end up with a vibration. We charge $280 parts + Labor to change one axle. Don't go cheap on these you get what you pay for.

Sorry, I was mistaken. The mechanic said it was the CV boot that went bad and if I didn't get it fixed, then my CV axle would go bad, etc.
It is expensive to replace. Should I take it to a general service shop or to the dealer?

Yah, your cv boot... You shouldnt have to worry about it.. if i were you i would just replace the whole axle anyway.. its too hard to replace just the boot.. its a bitch. You can drive on it all you want and it shouldnt get any worse really. If you are going to replace the whole axle then you can get a remanufactured one for about 80 bucs or a brand new one for 150.. And if you are replacing the whole axle then drive on it all you want... look at my post ^ there with the link.. thats a great axle
just get it fix it not that hard it will save your cv joints from going bad. I dont think 60 bucks justfiy 10 bucks for a boot. but if someone is doing it and charge you for labor then it a differnt story. look for prices first. If it is clicking then replace it. IMO
my boot slid off the axle, and i just popped it back on. it wasnt rippped or anything, so i figured it would be ok. no problems since...

Buy an autozone axle and replace if/when it vibrates, and get the lifetime warranty.
