What do ya think?
Hello I've been reading through this forum for a few weeks now and decided to join the community.
I don't kno what to go with engine wise on my 91 rex si. Money is in short supply and I was wondering how much hp I could get out of a D16Z/y8 non turbo after the basic upgrades such as intake and exhaust ect. Would it be better for me to just save up the money for a b16? I plan on doing the swap myself (my first time =0) and the d series seems to be a walk in the park.
What I ultimatley want is a super clean daily driver with that extra get up and go. I just wonder if the D16z/y8 will be enough to please me. Any thoughts or advise would be greatly apreciated.

Well first off you should really check out the search feature on the site. Its top notch. And it will give you all the info you need plus more.
But to answer your question. Many people stay D series and are happy. But many usually turbo it to give it the up and go. The b16 is very nice and not a very complicated swap. But it will require much mroe money than a D series swap. From my experiance you will get bored of the D series NA. And also the B16. I was happy with my b16 until I was seeing cars that I felt were slower beating me. So I got bored with the b16 even though its a very nice motor. I eventually went lsvtec.
But as you say you want a clean DD with some extra get up and go. I think the b16 would suit your purpose and you get more looks with that engine than a D series. But im sure some will disagree with me on that one. Just my .02

mr. jakscivic is speaking truth about the b16. great little motor but will get boring after a while because of its great lack in torque. thats why im going b20vtec
do what fits your budget. if its d series, go that way, if you can afford more, then go that way.
do a lot of resarch before you begin anything, that way you run into as few obstacles as possible.

Thanks a ton for the feed back I'm still undecided, however. I'll search around the archives a bit more see what I can find. It helps to see your personal thoughts on it I apreciate it.
Not tryin to thread jack but why do MANY motors dyno in less HP than what they are known to have. Like Ive seen to cases personally where 2 guys did a B16 swap @nd gen) in there CRX's and both dyno's came back about 10-15 less HP than the original 170??
well, depends what b16 it is, (i say this from hmotorsonline.com so i might be wrong) and also one is crank hp and one is wheel hp. WHP is all that matters anyway. You will also see many differences between two dynos just from brand. Also changes can occur on the exact same dyno 2 minutes apart. how hard the car is strapped down and slippage also has a factor in dynometer readings. I am sure the many "DYNO PROS" on here can tell you even more and maybe even tell me im wrong, but i am just sharing my experiences.

Ahh good to know. Well if anyone cared I'm going with d16z6 for the price. Plus I can tweak it out a bit and it would still be cheaper then a b16 from hmotors or somthing similar to that. If I do turbo it will be in the not to near future....another thing that helped me decided was d-series.org after reading in detail about the engines it just seemed to suit me.
EDIT: By the way I was buying a 91 si and was suposed to pick it up this weekend but someone swept in and offered more cash....it was a steal too 68k miles, 1 owner, no crashes, for only 2 stacks? I knew it was too good to be true
So if anyone in the chicagoland area is selling a rex leme kno...
