Tranny noise with new setup...

Hey guys…
Just thought I’d get your thoughts on this issue I’m experiencing with my new setup… When I installed the engine I was lucky enough to buy a newly rebuilt tranny with an ATS FD from a good friend who is now doing a K swap. I sold my old JDM FD equipped tranny as a result.
When the engine comes up to temperature and the idle starts to naturally drop to ~900RPM or so the tranny starts making a rattling noise. Now the idle with the Pro1 cams is not silky smooth so I’m not entirely sure this rattle is bearing related or simply the gears knocking around a little as a result of the rougher idle.
The sound goes away completely when the revs go up to 1100RPM or so…

I’m also running with Honda’s new friction modified MTF fluid which I noticed was much thinner then the old stuff. This might allow the gears to move more freely inside the tranny when the idle is rough, resulting in increased noise.
The previous owner (whom I trust very much) did not notice this problem at all when he was running it after the recent rebuild.
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Yeah the fluid is a lot thinner, but it should make no difference at all. Geeeez, sounds like it is internal in the tranny. Slave cylinder not squeeking against the pivot of the tranny arm? Or stock clutch disk springs rattling? Im sure its hard to
pinpoint and even opening up the tranny you might not notice anything. Hope this helps and good luck.

I don't think it has anything to do with the slave cylinder or pivot arm. The sound is only present when the clutch is engaged to the main shaft which starts spinning the gears in the tranny.
I have only driven the car 15 feet since installing the tranny (the car is in storage until spring comes). but nothing feels out of the ordinary through the stick shift.
The clutch is very new but I was wondering if the spring loaded clutch might also induce oscillations inside the tranny as the engine lopes around at idle.
Tearing the tranny apart to find nothing wrong is what I want to avoid… The previous owner just had it rebuilt and didn’t notice this problem when it was installed on his stock B18C5.

Is it an oe or aftermarket clutch. Probably shouldn't make a difference, but you never know. In my experience i've never heard of a lumpy idle make a tranny noise. Sorry if i wans't any help.

My thoughts as well but I don't want to pull the tranny if this is something that might not be a real problem...

May be... but its an OE clutch with only 200ish km on it. Before the build I didn't notice any problems with it.

sounds like the input shaft bearing is getting a little bit noisey. low rpm @ idle is where they start being noticable. I have also seen loose springs in the disk make the same noise but with yours being so new that doesnt sound likely...
