Default Timing belt broke, winter beater, intereference engine?

hey guys, today I picked up a winter beater, it is a 89 prelude si 2.0, automatic, 156k miles. The guy I bought it from said that last month he went to go start the car to let it warm up for a few minutes, went inside, than came back out to find the car shut off. I pulled the cover off, the belt is broken, so my question is do you think I can just have someone throw a belt on and be good? Is this an interference engine?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, it's an interference engine, but damage to valves is hit and miss. Put a new belt on and then do a compression test and see if the engine will run.

Is there anyway to check compression without getting a belt on? I got the car for $120, and to tell you the truth its in pretty good condition, some rust around the rear fenders.
I have heard since the car was idling that I will most likley be lucky and just be able to toss a belt on, is this true?

Yes, there is a better chance you can save the motor since it was only ideling.

You will have to put the belt on it to check the compression though.
