Well im was working on my 00 Lude and I took off the valve cover and inside it looks like crap, (Very brown/yellow and burnt oil on some bolts). So Any one know how to clean it? Or do i have to take head off and then clean it? (I would rather skip the taking head off). Well I Guess last owner did not take care of her or something... It only has 63xxx miles and looks like 200,xxx miles on it. Well any help will help, thanx!
Other than trying to wipe that crap out with rags and stuff, there's not much you can do with the head still on. If you remove it you can take it to a machine shop and they can get it spotless in the parts washer, or you could also use some elbow grease and carb cleaner if you wanted to do it yourself...

I usually like to use pantene pro-v with 2 in 1 shampoo, that really gets the the head really nice and clean, and fresh!
but really though, you shouldnt worry too much about what you see in your head, if you really want to clean it up a bit, switch to a syntheic. like mobil it will clean it up really good

This is what my head looked like before I put it in an ultrasonic bath. Not a great pic but....

And here are 2 of it after the ultrasonic bath.

If you really want to clean it I suggest you take it off but you have to make sure you get all the coolant out or it could possibly get into the cylinders. You would also need a new head gasket and make sure you torque it back down correctly.
Like the others said, it's normal. It will just get that way again and it's not like anyone sees it anyways.

Actually my dad works part time at a BMV motorcycle repair shop and used it there. So it was free. I've never used a hot tank so I couldn't tell you.
